well prader-willi, if i were you in the last 21 days of my exam i not go in for any adventure and read an entirely new book. i would rather revise and review my previously studied materials so that i can be confident of what i read. thanks for all your good wishes.

i m sorry to hear about your experience unfortunate. please dont consider yourself a Failure. What i think is either you win or you learn, there is no such thing as failure/loss. just get into a positive frame of mind. concentrate on your weakness as you have assessed by your usmle score sheets, pray to god and start reading with full concentration. discuss a lot with other people who are giving exams. also if u can tell me what books you are refering, you might also consider joining kaplan classes if you can afford them. i think you should be fine, you should just modify your approach towards the exam. all the best. good luck. sharvil

hey sharvil.

Thanks a lot for your advice!

i'm a doctor from China, and graduated from medical university 11 years before. So, it's too long for me to memorize the basic medicine.

would you like to give me some advice about what books i should use in my preparation for step1. should i review all textbooks first?

thank you again!

Sharvil,

I think I fell in Love with you when I read your post, no, no just kidding, I really enjoyed what you wrote, thank you for taking the time, it is ridiculously strange that I can find such great motivation and inspiration from someone I haven't met, and for that I sincerely thank you.

I have one question, I am starting to study for step 1, and I want to match in 2007, I know that ERAS opens aprox. in Sep 1, do I need to have my step 1 grade by september to be able to start the registration process, I know that I neeed to have my ECFMG certification done by Feb, but am I going to be able to match in 2007 and start the process if I get my grade for step 1 in October for example??? I am asking because It is March, and I work, so I want to give me at list 5 to 6 months to study, if not I would have to take the exam in August, and I will only have 4 months to study. What do you think?

Yolanda

Hi Shilly,

If you have been out of touch with medical school for a long time i would advice you to brush up your old text books. if it is in chinese then you must study in english now. i have a chinese friend who did have a lot of trouble because everything has to be done in english now. i think kaplan is good enough, but time to time if you feel you need to go back to the basics you should refer to the larger text books. please tell me if u need more help. good luck.

well yolanda, thank your for fallin in love with me,winksmiling face!!!!!!!!

yes eras opens on 1 september and it is not necessary for you to have any score in hand in order to register for eras, but i think you atleast need an ECFMG/USMLE ID number, so i guess you must atleast be registered for a step i think. But my sincere advice to you would be to have as many scores as possible in hand before september 1 in order to maximize your chances of getting an interview. good luck.

yes layla, kaplan anatomy is enough for test, however i found it too lengthy so what i did was compass anatomy, high yield neuroanat, high yield embryo and histo. hope that helps. good luck.

HI Sharvil

what is the best time for studying Goljan ? after finishing all the Kaplan note or any other suggestion!?

and how long do you think it would take for someone who studies, 6-8 hours aday to finish studying Goljan Audio?

and when i can find Goljan 5 star and the other one that you mentioned from Goljan!

i love the way you advice people, all are very positive !!!!

thanks

Layla

Hi allie, I think you are going fine..........You might read kaplan once I think. Right now if you think you did a mistake by reading all the "wrong books" then i think you are wrong. The other books are also good, its just that i am very well adapted to kaplan. also kaplan does stress a lot on high yield. so yeah, if u feel that you have enough time, it is not a bad idea to postpone your exam and finish one reading of kaplan so that you are satisfied with your preparation which in turn will increase your confidence levels. i think lippincott is an excellent book for pharmacology, much more comprehensive than kaplan, if u have prepared lippincot pharmac u shud be able to brush thru kapkan pharmac in 3 days max. also check ur nbme score report and see your areas of weakness and concentrate on them too. 70% in kaplan cd is a good score. dont be disheartened, you are on the right track.........and u shud be fine in the exam. everyone is always apprehensive about the usmles and u can never be satisfied with the amount of prep u have done!! good luck! a

layla, frankly speaking i have no idea about goljan audio, but i have heard that it is good from friends. i had done goljan after i read my kaplan patho once, i just did patho from goljan. in order to find books, ask friends, medical school seniors, forum friends, ebay.com, half.com, amazon.com. my advice is that if u cannot read the theory from goljan, its ok, but the questions are too good to miss, i believe that i got a lot of similar questions in the actual exam. good luck! and may u conquer! heard a lot about the story of layla and majnu in India, I know its just a screen name.

  #39

thanks a lot seems.

hi status, i think i studied 5 star goljan pathology or some book like that.

hi asr, in order to boost ur confidence u need to do more and more questions. kap q bank cd is good, also q book is great too. try to do kaplan simulated if u can. also do the ecfmg sample cd. its very very helpful. also discuss with ur friends or study group.

good luck to all

maybe you have already said it, but how many questions could you solve in an entire day ,( reading answers too).did you read answers to the choices you got right?

  #41

of course u have to read answers to all questions whether u got them right or wrong, reading answers = reinforcing ur theory, its like a whole new revision. i did from 50-200 questions per day depending on my mood, sometimes i felt bored to read the theory and would solve questions. but u shud alteast solve 2000-2500 questions before the exams.

good luck

i think u shud watch the dvds if u have them esp the behavioral and biochem ones. all of them are good according to my friends. u shud do one reading with the dvds.

i did both qbook and qbank for step 1

sorry for the delay in answering.........good luck.

hi,

In US, each state has their own policy; If you passed the Step 1,2,3 and matched for residency in US; According to different state policyn, need you take some specific examines again or not? Tx

  #45

i think its only step 1,2,3 thats all. i am not aware of any state specific sites.

hi sharvil.i really want to thank u for such a great post which u wrote .i wanted to know how u were using kaplan DVD did u take notes will listening to DVD or just listened to them simply pls tell me that thank u god bless

  #47

i did not have kaplan dvds, but i think u shud take notes while u listen to them.

the best way is read kaplan text once, then listen to dvds and keep writing notes simultaneoulsy and then read ur kaplan text with the included notes in them.

that should be SOLID!! good luck

Hi sharvil. thank u so much for the valuable advice ur a gem of a kind.i wanted to ask u one thing more.how did u memorised whole kaplan what method did u usedto memorise it ,all ur answer are valuable to me and will greatly appreciate it .Really this forum and the people here are so good and thank u so much.god bless

  #49

i think i read the kaplan 4 times so it was almost memorized. well u have to read again and again. make notes and discuss, the best way to learn is to teach someone. try to discuss topics with a study group. for step 1 first aid has a lot of useful mnemonics to help u remember things. also make a diary of useful facts and keep reading them frequently......so that u can memorize hard to remember facts. also try to remember to study and relax adequately also....remember when u r fresh, and keep in mind the fact that each line of the textbook has the potential to save a life!! if ur patients life depends on ur memory i think ur memory will work fine.

Hi Sharvil
Thank you for all your support
I am a little bit confused. I have an average of 60% on Kaplan questions.
Do I need to repeat the same questions until I reah my goal or do I need to go with others questions until I reach the 75% or more.
am working with mainly Kaplan questions
