How to talk to: A cancer patient Agenda: Be sympathetic and supportive without making her feel pitied. Best opening gambit: Restraint. You must walk the line between overdoing it and pretending nothing's wrong. "I hated feeling like a victim or a source of panic and shock," says Kelley Grautski, a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. Instead of rambling in discomfort, be quiet and listen. "I wasn't very keen on getting medical advice or absorbing other people's fears for me," says Grautski. "I wanted them to say 'Are you okay? I'm here for you' and then let me talk." Best body language: Act normal. "Treat the patient as you usually would," says Givens. She may be in too much pain for a tight hug, so watch for cues from her. She'll beckon you with open arms or reach out a hand. Be in receiver mode and let her guide your physical contact. Fatal error: Talking about death. "People always asked about survival rates," says Grautski. "I was okay with that because mine were good. But the friends I made during my treatment whose prognoses weren't good did not want to talk about how many months they had left on earth
