I'm still figuring out the usmle. Please help me do it. I will complete my internship in mid-2007, after which I intend taking 2CK. Some folks say taking Step 1 first is always better...so I've started to question my decision. Is it possible for an IMG to take Step 1 during the internship? I want to space out the steps (that I begin taking in mid-2007) in a way that will allow me to get into a residency (the heavens willing) by 2008. How should I do it? Plus, two things that I just can't seem to figure out: What is MATCH and what on earth is SCRAMBLE? Thank you. -Frontal

Depends on ur academic prowess and innate test-taking ability, ur timeline for the preparation for step 1 in terms of ur preparation may be as short as 1 month or as long as 6 months. It all depends on you. You make that call. Step 1 is basic medical sciences and step 2 is geared to address the clinical aspect of the board exams. Take ur pick on what u would rather take. Step 1 first is the most popular choice. Match is the day when the programs that have interviewed u have been "matched" to the interviewees they have seen and thus like. Scramble is the unfortunate time when u didnt match and u "scramble" for an unfilled position after the match. Hope this helps.

Thanks drbee. Is it possible to begin taking the steps in 2007 and get into a residency by 2008? After how many months of appearing in the last step do folks generally take CS? Also, what does an IMG do to get into a really good college? I never see the really popular ones mentioned in the forum. I wonder why. They wouldn't consider us, so we just return the favor...or is it because people don't want to come across as wishful thinkers? Regarding the Ck study materials, text-books are usually not mentioned. Do the notes (Kaplan mainly) and the Q banks suffice? Thanks again for the reply. It did help. I'm looking forward to another one. (smile).
