16. A 3-year study is planned to assess the incidence and etiology of respiratory

disease in 574 individuals greater than age 60. The study population consists of

two groups: one group cares for children under the age of 5; the second group

does not care for children. At the onset of respiratory symptoms, cultures and

serologic studies will be performed. Which of the following best describes this

study design?
A. Case-control
B. Case series
C. Clinical trial
D. Cohort
E. Community survey

I agree to D

  #7

A

  #8

Its D prospective study

case control is retrosepective

  #9

ya it is a cohort stydy.
In clinical trail there is comparison between two treatments.

  #10

in case control study incidence cannot be found out...neither can be prevalence...swo its D according to me...

dear frnds,

i think its A.coz here we r comparing 2 grps.

not C coz in clinical trial we giv the ppl someting and then study them

not cohort coz we study them for a period of time long enuff till the disease appears in them.

all comments r welcomed.

smal,

COHORT prospective

CASE CONTROL retrospective

I think D, because the study is prospective.

smal, you should read the first line of the qestion stem one more time. Then you will find out there is one word giving you the right direction---"planned"

This question screams of COHORT study design. There are 3 major clues in the question stem:

1) INCIDENCE will be assessed. Only Cohort studies allow you to assess incidence.

2) The "risk factor" here is caring vs. not caring for children under 5.

3) "At the onset of respiratory symptoms, cultures and serologic studies will be performed." Meaning Dz will come at some point in the future.

Remember, in a cohort study, you split groups based on RISK FACTOR(S), which is caring for children under 5, in this scenario. The DISEASE that will be assessed is respiratory Dz, which is hypothesized to come at some point in the future.

Be aware that there is a variant of cohort studies called the Retrospective Cohort design, where exposure is ascertained from past records and outcome (i.e. Dz vs. no-Dz) is ascertained AT THE TIME the study is begin.
