You are reading wrong book for genetics, if you are preparing for the USMLE - 'Emery's Elements of Medical Genetics' is UK book and also, too detailed.
Get, for example, Jorde's 'Medical Genetics' instead.
and yes, ManuNastai is right - you should read biochemistry before genetics, in order to understand it.
