3.A randomized,double blind clinical trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of two antifungal drugs for treating a common dermatological problem.
All participants in the study had been previously diagnosed with the fungal infection.Half of the study participants received a newly developed antifungal agent and half received the commonly prescribed alternative.The sample size was selected to provide a statistical power of 70%.Results of the study showed that the fungus disappeared in 50% of the patients receiving the newer agent and in 40% of patients receiving the alternative treatment.Results of the study stated p=0.13
Using the commonly accepted alpha criterion,the chance that the study results will not reflect the results of the treatment for this type of fungus in the population at large is which of the following?
A.0
B.10
C.13
D.30
E.70
F.87

No robin, the answer is D

beta error=1-power

At first reading I think it asks about alpha error: the chance that the study results will not reflect the results of the treatment for this type of fungus in the population at large.

can some one please explain how did we figure out that it is asking about beta error. the question mentions standard alpha criterion. please can u answer as my exam is in two days

hey chinda. this is a Qbank question. I also think it must be alpha error! That's why I posted it

"the chance that the study results will not reflect the results of the treatment for this type of fungus in the population at large"
I think this is what it means...
the treatment in reality shows that the drug is working and according to the Q , this should not reflect in the study result that is it should not work in the study result...then according to the 2 by 2 table in the first aid it would be Beta. so its 0.30

doc179. the Q says there is a difference 50% vs 40%, so the test result shows H1

(according to 2x2 table in FA as you says) but they ask the chance of not being so in reality so H0 in reality, it means alpha error. Please correct me

the chance that the study results will not reflect the results of the treatment for this type of fungus in the population at large

means the study result should not be the same as in reality( H1 ), so the study result should be H0... and if its so then according to that table it becomes beta.

this is what I feel ...I might be wrong...

we don't know about reality. The only thing that we have, is study result

and study result is H1

Results of the study stated p=0.13
Using the commonly accepted alpha criterion,the chance that the study results will not reflect the results of the treatment for this type of fungus in the population at large is which of the following?
===============

p=0.13 > 0.05 - faile to reject H0 that means drug is not good BUT
we could make BETA(II) error drug is good with chance
beta = 1 - Power= 1-0.7(70%)=0.3(30%)

D
