Once an antigen-antibody complex forms with IgM antibodies it binds to the complement and inactivates it so that it cannot take part in another antigen antibody combination....and therefore "fixes" it.

so it means that, when IgM binds with an antigen, this Ag-Ab complex can bind to the complement and inactivate the complement, right?? but then i hv another question, why intravascular hemolysis occurs becoz IgM can fix complement, while extravascular hemolysis occurs becoz IgG cannot fix complement??

complement fixation causing the inactivation of complement is more of an invitro phenomenon and can be rephrased as-----> the cpomplement is fixed by the antigen antibody and is not available for use to lyse the sensitized RBC that are subsequently added( Complement fixation reaction is said to be positive)..but inside the body if antigen atibody bind to complement fix it, their occurs complement mediated lysis. hope that helps.
