This is from FA 2006.

=============================================

Antigen variation:

Classic examples:

Bacteria-Salmonella (two flagellar variants), Borrelia (relapsing fever), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (pilus protein).

Virus-influenza (major=shift, minor=drift).

Parasites-trypanosomes (programed rearrangement).

==============================================

Please explain what this is about? what is major shift, minor drift? what is programed rearrangement?

Thanks in advance.

This means that these antigens may have different epitopes... For example there could be populations of bacteria with the same type of virulence factor (Ex pilli in Neisseria G.) and are antigenically unrelated... These bacteria can change periodically the antigenic structure by switching epitopes of their pilli so they can avoid hosts sepcific immune response..
