Cheilosis is a painful condition where cracking at the corner(s) of the mouth occur. Its usual cause is when there is a loss of support in the facial region due to ill fitting dentures, excessive wear of the natural teeth to cause an overclosure of ones bite, or in people who have a habit of licking the corner(s) of their mouth. The moisture of the saliva that pools in this area at the corner(s) of the mouth allows for a fertile environment for candidiasis to form. This will cause cracking, redness and an uncomfortable irritation for the patient. Other causes can be a riboflavin deficiency, diabetes, AIDS, and an excessive amount of supplemental vitamin A. If the cause is from ill fitting dentures, new ones may have to be fabricated and a soothing ointment, on the irritated area, may help relieve the discomfort and allow for quicker healing. If the cause is due to a systemic condition, blood tests and a microscopic evaluation may be necessary to find the underlying cause. When found, the treatment can be initiated, and healing is usually quick.

It`s a painful inflammation and cracking of the corner (or more often - corners) of the mouth. Usually it`s caused by vitamin B deficiency (especially - deficiency of riboflavine). Other causes can be diabetes, anemia, AIDS and other immunological disorders.
