A 14-year-old boy is evaluated for short stature. He has no significant past medical history and is considered otherwise healthy by his parents. He eats a normal diet and has regular meals. His height and weight have been consistently at the 5th percentile since early childhood. His physical examination is normal, with genitalia at Tanner stage 3. Which of the following is the most likely laboratory finding for this boy? A. Bone age that is equivalent to chronologic age B. Decreased complement C3 level C. Decreased serum albumin concentration D. Decreased thyroid stimulating hormone E. Increased serum creatinine concentration

the answer is A. this boy in all probabilities has familial short stature (FSS). Children with FSS usually have a normal birth weight and length. At the age of 2-3 years, however, their growth begins to decelerate and drops to around the 5th percentile. The onset and progression of puberty in children with FSS are normal ( as indicated by a normal physical examination with genitalia at tanner stage 3). Bone age will typically be consistent with the chronologic age in FSS. in constitutional delay the genitalia (secondary sexual characteristics) will not be developed as would be expected for that age group(but there will be some development).
