Why CO decreases oxygen content but not oxygen saturation??

  #2

Oxygen saturation drops in CO poisoining......Co competes with the binding sites on Hb...but the Pa02 remains normal...

  #3

thank you, so what about in anemia, what is the change in oxygen saturation, also decreases??

  #4

no ....in anemia saturation will be normal ..there is just drop in Hb...All the 4 binding sites of Hb for oxygen will we working normal..infact )2 content and partial pressure of O2 will be normal too..

  #5

druas is perfecly right, there will be no change in affinity, hence, the shape of the 02-hb curve. However the platue will be lower because the total content of o2 is reduced secondary to reduced hg concentration.

It is important to point out that ,if tissue hypoxia develops then the curve will shift to the right.
