At the hospital where I am at. EVERYONE on the floor gets GI prophylaxis (usually protonix). Is there a reason why? I can understand for some pathologies but why does EVERYONE get it?

the answer why do they use it: to prevent stress gastritis. But PPI or H2 blockers are one of the groups of medications that are most often over-prescribed.
