is fetal head engaged at +3 station....????????

  #2

yes it is... the head is said to be engaged when it is at '0' station i.e. at the level of the ischial spines. +4 is the pelvic floor and -4 is when the baby just starts to enter the pelvis.

hope that helps.

hi... agreed that when the head crosses 0 station.. implies it has engaged.. but are there 4 stations or only 3? i read in kaplan of -3 to +3 stations... can u correct me if i am wrong? thank u

'There are two systems of measuring how far above or below the presenting part is. One divides the distance to the pelvic inlet into thirds and thus station is - 3 to 0 and then 0 to + 3. The other method uses centimeters, which gives stations of - 5 to + 5.'

form 'Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology'.

hi! i had a look at the pic attached by achilles . it says ., large baby at 41 weeks engaged at -2 station..

so i think that engagement occurs when the fetal head enters the true pelvis = -3 station

0 station is when it has reached the ischial spines

+3 station when crowning takes place at the pelvic outlet..

tht is , 0 station and + r reached only during the labor but engagement can occur (esp in primigravida) 2 to 4 weeks b4 onset of labor...we call it tht the "head is fixed " on abdominal examination

plz correct me if i m wrong...
