IgG and IgM both activate complement.

How are they different in their mechanism of activating complement?

IgG activates only till C3 and IgM goes all the way till C9

yes... As far as I know:

IgG activates C1-C3
IgM activates C1-C9

IgM is More effective at activating complement.
