I have been interviewed by only one program, but the speciality is not my best choice. I am confused, should I try in post match and not rank that program. Or should I rank it and not take the chance of losing a residency position. What if I am not satisfied later with the speciality. I have pretty good credentials but was not ready by the proper application deadline so have to rely on post match if not this program. Please give me suggestions as I have now only one day to decide.

I would suggest you to go for scramble, if not Match'08.

Its upto you, decide your fate.......

GL for the match

WHat about the possibility of changing the program later if I didn't like it? Is it very hard to do that.

  #6

yes I am in the same boat
I have got 2 interviews and I am going for the match although this is not my 1st choice speciality
I have also not submitted ROL
I think u can change after 1st year if u dont like
please correct m if I am wrong

Hello, afds,
At least I am not alone. I think you are right that at the end of the year the program can be changed. You must have talked to someone about it, what is general feedback about this kind of situation. I think in scramble there is only 10 to 20% chance of getting a position.

If you really do not like a program or the specialty then don't rank it! While technically you can change programs at the end of the year you have to start from scratch once again. How you're going to get LOR is going to be a major concern as the program you match in will make your life hell if you wanna leave halfway and LOR would not really be their priority. If you match somewhere then be prepared to do the entire course. In certain situations people do manage to change programs but thats usually due to personal reasons like family otherwise its not really easy to move about.

I agree very strongly with veer zara. Chances arevery low in post match and changingthe specialty at the end of one year. I beleive that they should not be considered a choice except as a last resort.
Anyway, post your credentials and we may be able to give you a good idea of your chances in the post match.

Hey MK06...

i faced a similar situation...even though i had interview calls in the speciality i wanted...they either didn't sponsor the H1 visa...or those programs were too far away from where i live presently.the programs(2 of them) which i'm ranking high r not my top choice speciality...but i'm going for it.i guess u can't get everything u want...i'm determined to give my 100% to this field and if even after 3 years of residency i don't feel comfortable practicing internal medicine....it'll be time to switch my line.

my husband was telling me to wait a year and re-apply in pediartics and neurology(2 fields i wanted)...but i've decided not to waste this year.i tried hard by applying in all specialites and if IM is what i'm meant to do....i'm all for it.

waiting for the match now....:-)...and i hope i've made trhe right decision.

Just want to add another thing, assuming if you match in a program you didn't like and want to apply to another program.......then let me inform you that you will starting residency in July this year and september the 2007-match beings, giving you only 2 in the new program. How are you going to ask LOR after owrking for just 2months??? The program will be very upset with you as well and you've just joined with 10more months to complete the year!Thats why I'm saying its not easy to jump the tracks unless you complete the entire residency.

To smak, thats strange you got calls for IM but not for peds as peds is suppose to be less competitive.

Very well said.

Thanks a lot Friends, for the feedback,
These are exactly the reasons I am shaky in my decision but I am a bit worried about having nothing in the end.

bbb what do you suggest. I have to decide today.
About my credentials, I have done a full residency from my home country, have a North American Masters Degree, some publications in good journals and Canadian and American LORs. My scores are not in 90s though. 88/84 in step1/step2, currently preparing for step3. I don't hate the specialty I am talking about but for sure its not my first choice. I am almost sure I'll match in that one. But ofcourse not sure about postmatch. I am not a fresh graduate, so as time goes on I am falling back according to most prgram criterias.

Smack I wish I could exchange with you what I have got. I love IM and want to do ID fellowsip. I have got pediatrics and have a feeling that pediatric ID may not be that exciting for me.

I was facing a similar situation. Thinking about ranking 2 specialties or only my number 1. If I ranked both specialties I was pretty sure I would match somewhere but I decided to take the risk and pursue what I REALLY want, thanks to the advice of many friends I believe I am doing the right thing.

You said "I have pretty good credentials but was not ready by the proper application deadline so..." . I would consider go for post match or apply next year, for sure you will have everything ready therefore more probablilities.

Even if you may be happy in the other residency, you may always think "what if"...

Good luck!!
