I am not sure how you get into research but I know that mostly they are non paid jobs.

m not 100% sure but i have met people on J1 visa on research,problem with H1B for research is issual of grants!!,and it is apparently easier to go into research with J1.
and often on J1 it is a paid job,either sponsored by research university or a drug company.
