I am an img and my stats are these.... grad 2004 usmle scores : 99/99/cs pass/ waiting for step3 results no USCE no research Need visa applied to 80 programs got interviews at Rochester general, rochester,ny.... john hopkins sinai program, baltimore.... roger williams medical center, providence, rhode island michael reese program, chicago, illinois interviewed at the first three places....the int at chicago got cancelled because apparently their positions were filled. roger williams medical center offered a prematch....i did not accept it because the place is good for only hem/onc i mean if one is looking for fellowships. moreover, it offers a J1 visa. I intend to work here on an H1B. Now suppose i dont match, i would have apply again next year. my visa expires in august. will i be able to come here before it expires and be able to attend all possible interviews? or should i try postmatch scramble?i was planning to apply for one of those organisations that help in the scramble process. please advice me on this guys. thanks in advance.

well chance favors the prepared mind and u seem to have prepared urself for postmatch.. im in a slightly similar position i think u deserve better for ur creds are better than mine. but comin to ur question - i believe if u come in end of july with a return ticket and argue for a 6 month duration of stay - u wud get a stay until january mid and finish all ur iviews in the meantime. worst case that u get a lesser duration of stay - u cud apply for an extension - thats an automatic coupla of months until ur appeal gets processed. i believe that if u come in july mid and schedule all ur iviews in oct, nov and early dec - u shud be in good shape. but do consult a lawyer about such matters. 1 thing u shudnt do - let the visa expire and not come here and spend 2000usd applyin to progs in sept and go to the consulate askin for a new visa. if its rejected then my friend ur in a horrible condition. better be in this country. if u havent given s3 till then then after comin here on a b1 in july, switch to a kaplan f1 visa inside the usa which takes around 3 weeks to process and gives u 6-9 months of stay for some 3000usd course fee. bottom line - if ur in usa, u can work things out hope it helps apurva

Hello msjk...... I think for your credentials and year of graduation you deserve a very good program, if you dont have any problem with waiting for next year, it might be beter then the issue of visa comes in, if after match you didn't get into the place of your choice, I would apply to renew my visa immediately only if it doesn't take too much time to get the outcome of the application. If your visa is still valid, the probability of their extending it (approval) is high and if they deny it which I am sure they wont, you wont have the valid visa cancelled so you can then go with apurva idea and work things out that way. I sincerely wish you the best

With your credentials, what do you think is the reason that you got so less number interviews? Did you apply very late?

I think you should go for the post match scramble, you have a great chance and I think its worth a try instead of waiting another year and spending more money next year. GL ..
