24. The majority of cellular proteins and RNA are synthesized throughout the cell cycle and are only interrupted briefly during M phase. Synthesis of which of the following proteins occurs predominantly in S phase of the cell cycle?
A) Cyclins

B) DNases

C) Histones

D) RNA polymerases

E) snRNPs (small nuclear ribonucleoproteins)

F) Tubulins

30. An increase in the activity of which of the following enzymes is most likely to increase the rate of metabolism of glucose 6-phosphate through glycolysis in the liver?

A) Fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase

B) Fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (aldolase A)

C) Fructose 2,6-bisphosphatase

D) Glucokinase

E) 6-Phosphofructo-1-kinase

please explain. ty.

A?

  #3

24. C

what did I post the previous time?!!! sorry. I'm just tiredwink

  #4

24. why C?
30. D, right?

  #5

i'm with you c & d.

  #6

24. C I'm sure about the answer. Histones are synthesized in S phase

30. E

  #7

Maybe I'm wrong.
Glucokinase enzyme: Glucose to Glucose 6-Phosphate.... so guess that Increases the production of G6P, not increases the rate of metabolism...

Nadia, why do you pick E?

Hi Drvirgo, glucokinase could be the correct answer provided that question had not asked about increasing rate of metabolism of glucose 6-phosphate via glycolysis. So from glucose 6-phosphate till the end of glycolysis, the only enzyme in the list that is also the most important enzyme in the glycolysis is phosphofructokinase

  #9

if the question had asked about increasing the rate of glycolysis from the beginning, glucose, so both D and E were correct.

  #10

i agree with E at 30.

  #11

Thanks Nadia... You are right...

c and E, good explanation Nadia

  #17

they make you crazy with those numbers but it's E , the enzyme is PFK-1, phosphofructokinase 1

Thread extension: How is PFK1 controlled? In other words...what are the stimulators & inhibitors

  #19

PFK1 is stimulated by AMP and insulin and inhibited by ATP, citrate and glucagon.

Insulin and glucagon control PFK 1 indirectly through PFK2 (insulin stimulate PFK2, glucagon inhibits PFK2).

Why this fancy name 6-Phosphofructo-1-kinase and not just PFK-1? DOes both mean the same?

  #21

c
e

  #22

Can somebody please explain why the answer to 24 is C, because the way I understand it, in the S phase, DNA replication occurs and the only protein used in replication is the RNA polymerase. Histones, I don't know when they are formed.
