I am so sorry to know that.Dont be disappointed in yourself. This is a tough exam and we are not used to the patterns. There is no doubt u must have worked really hard, its just that this exam requires a lot more than simple prep and hard work.U must have heard"X only studied the last day and scored higher than all of us although we have worked so hard for the whole month".Its not that X is a genius, its just that he knows the techniques to do well.May be he is a very calm person, may be he knows how to attempt MCQs,may be he has a better memory,or may be he is lucky. Believe me not everyone passes in their first attempt. But there are many many factors that count.and afterall this is not the end of life.Right now just try to look away from books for a while and start all over again seeking guidance from those who have passed well.Believe me hard work never goes waste.God will reward you with eternal rewards for your hard work.Just be brave.GL

You didnt lose your eyesight! Good advice malinda! As said take a break . Then take a deep breath, get some water, get up and fight! No one ever went wrong with the proper mix of 1st Aid, Kaplan, good qs and Harrison.

tb, would you mind sharing with us how you prepared for your last try and how your practice NBME and other scores were. Then maybe those that have gotten the >90 can help you better prepare for next time. You say you feel like crying. I literally did cry secretly for atleast 3 days. Let it out man...With God's help you can beat this thing. I just started studying again. Its tough but we can't give up.

Hey tb, I am so sorry ! I know it wonŽt really make you feel any better right now, but my sister failed her USMLE 5 times, before finally passing (with a 75 or 76). And she found a residency program that accepted her anyway. Nowadays sheŽs making "big bucks" (normal US-MD salary), and is so glad that she just kept trying and trying without giving up. And one of my best friends here is a veterinarian-IMG who kept failing one of her US-licensing exams over and over and over again. She was so frustrated, and kept telling me how she could already have finished vet-school here, if she had attended it from the time that she started taking this exam. Finally after taking and retaking it for I-donŽt-know-how-many years, she just got notice last week that she had passed. Like I said, I know it wonŽt make you feel less sad, but just keep trying - you WILL get there ! And until you do, stick to this forum - you will find alot of great people and support here ! One more thing: you might want to consider starting a prep journal - that way people can give you a direct feed-back on where they think you might be going wrong. And I think youŽll find buddies with similar dates and start exchanging experiences, giving each other pointers etc. But that was just a thought. Hang in there, tb (and Ari and Chazan) - itŽll be worth it !

tb, this must be distressing but failure is a poor reason to give up. First, try to find out where you went wrong, why you failed a fourth time. Be clear about your goal in your head, regardless of family pressures, if at all they exist. Calm your mind, cry to ease out then brace yourself and tell your family. Try and build up some mental strength...a kind of shield against destructive criticism, should you have to face it. Simply put, feel strong inside (strength won't come lying limp in bed...after a while you have to put things back together. keep telling yourself you ARE strong and you CAN put this behind you..trust me the power of believing is immense...everyone talks about it, yet it cannot be overstated). After you've resolved to appear a fifth time (remember, failure should not be the reason for giving up), begin your preparation with optimism. (maybe spending five minutes everyday, at a fixed time, to stimulate yourself/meditate/reflect on the progress/put the brakes on certain wrong tendencies like studying the less important in depth, will help). The right mental attitude is extremely important. Try to clearly define your mistakes and work on them. Reflect on your technique, as pointed out by melinda. Take mock tests, keep a watch on your progress. Get in touch with people preparing for the exam. Maybe you could consider taking the kaplan classes. Make yourself strong tb, and KEEP yourself that way. Strength does not come naturally to a lot of people(to me it often doesn't)...you have to strive and achieve it by stimulation and forcing positive thoughts in your head. Good luck tb. Keep the faith (in yourself).

Hi there So sorry to hear about ur situation, but where there is a will there is a way, u can do it. To answer ur question, according to the 2005 First Aid book, on pg 20 it says that there is an unlimited amount of attempts to pass the step one according to NBME, but licensing authortities allow a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 attempts for each step examination, but u need to review ur schools policy regarding retakes. Anyhow please refer to page 20 in First Aid and if u have questions call ECFMG up, they should be able to tell u, best of luck with everything. I have not attempted to write the usmle, and have been studying since June of last year, I am scared to death to write. My family is annoyed with me pushing this off for so long, so i commend you on having the courage to write this exam, cause it is not allowing me to move forward what so ever. Once again best of luck, keep ur head up and don't write this next exam till u see a passing score on ur NBME's.

dear tb i agree 100 % with what frontal and melinda said. cant give you better advise than that. just wanna say that try to analyse your mistakes. you have worked hard and still failed 4 times. there must be some vital mistake that you are making again and again. may be you are studying wrong books( like trying to cover the course from big text books, or too many books), or may be you get very tense during test, or may be you dont practice many MCQs and only focus on learning. MCQs exercise mind and help strengthen ideas. so first you must analyse where things are going wrong. which hole is sinking the ship. than you should make a new plan and make sure that old mistakes are not repeated. best of luck.

Hi tb Dont be sad. I have been through what you are going through now. I failed in 95,96 and 97. All my old friends and buddies passed and went to US one by one and now they are settled physicians there. I gave up on it due to financial reasons. Other friends of mine who were trying and trying finally made it. I am back into the business now and plan to take it by the end of this year. There is no place in world like US for physicians where besides the money you feel rewarded and learn as physician in the true sense of the word. I have been working back home and in Middle East but I think if I had enough resources at that time I would have continued and not wasted 10 years of my life. So I think you are not that late. Standup and fight!!!
