HI Jackie, I have not done an observership yet but I am planning on doing one. The answer to your question is that an observership helps the most if you are planning to apply to the same hospital this way they get to know you on a personal basis. Your attendace and demeanor during the observership can have a huge impact. Also if you ask questions and answer questions. Aside from familiarizing yourself with the American system, they actually may let you take history and even do examination if they liked you towards the end. I think it is a different experience for every one. Overall it's better to get one instead of applying without any . Thanks Adamhouses@aol.com

Thanks so much Egypt2000. That really helped me. But if one is not sure where to apply, would an observership still help? I mean i dont know as of now where I would b able to get an observership and what programs i would b applying to. If u r doing an observership in a private doctor's office in US ....would it b helpful in your application? A private doc can give u a better LOR for that matter. Do u need any special Visa for observership or u can do it on yr B1/B2 when u go to the States for the CS exam?

I am planning to do an observership also, but will an observership in hand surgery be of any value in an interview? and for how long must it be to be of value?
