Hi everyone, I will really appreciate and be grateful to anyone who answers the following questions. 1) I have a question regarding prematch and match. Can somebody explain the prematch to me if possible. Is it that PDs call for interviews by reviewing applications through ERAS and if they like you, tell you to sign the contract before Match Day? Does that mean you do not go through match with this or other programs? 2) Post match scramble. How does it work? Is there a deadline for this? For example, say a person gave his exam after march 16th 2006, got results by april 2006, got ECFMG certification complete by June 2006 and the hospital has 2 unfilled positions at that time and their residency curriculum starts in july/ august of 2006, can the person still get into the program in 2006? 3) Also, can someone please post such programs that accept candidates apllying late into this whole process? Kindly reply. Thank you.

dear sm123, u r right about prematch..that is what it is. once u prematch at a place u r supposed to take urself out of the match...coz u already have a residency position. as for the post match...here is how it goes...everyone who gets a position in the match gets notified through the nrmp site on 13th of march. on 15th of mach nrmp posts a list of unfilled positions . if u were unmatched u can apply to 30 of these programs free of cost through eras and theoretically get a position. this is called scramble and it lasts till the 17th of march. BUT BEWARE this is theoretical. it is very hard to get something in the scramble, the unfilled positions get filled up in the first few hours and it is really hard to get any phone number through ...so u have to be really really lucky to get something in those hours. as for unfilled positions through the rest of the year...it is possible. if a person drops out or someone can't get here or whatever reasons, positions do become available during the rest of the year as well, but it is difficult to keep a track and get one. Match is the most straight forward and easy way to get a position. there is a site findaresident.com which enables u to find and apply to these year round unfilled positions. but as i said earlier, if u r an img, it gets harder to get a position outside of the match but possibilities do exist oterwise as well. hope i could help. muryum77

muryum77, Thanks for the detailed reply. But, I still had two more questions to clarify. So, you are saying that it is okay to give exam after match and as long as I am aware/ know of a hospital that has unfilled positions, I can get ecfmg certified before their curriculum starts and join their program? Also, the site 'findaresident.com' does not have any PGY1 postions! kindly reply

dear sm123, theoretically u can get a position year round if u r done with your exams and certification...ur residency can start in any month instead of 1st of july...but this happens if a canidate drops out and there is an unfilled position in the program.so u can join even after the program's circulum starts. also findaresident would not have a pgy-1 position right now coz right now everything is going for the match...so there r no available seats as such. once the scable is over occasional seats will keep on coming but i am telling you it is very hard to get a position out of the match. easiest way is through the match. i am saying this coz last year my result got delayed by 15 days and i had to go through the process. occasional seats do come out but usually they get filled up real quick or they want people with no visa issues. but theoretically it is possible to get a residency position later in the year as well. hope i could help. muryum77
