This post is for all those who beleive that they have a choice between categorical and prilim. From the limited experience that have got from roaming around over 20 program for my externship. research and interviews, I beleive that prilim is no easier than categorical. Remember that only those fellows who want to take medicine as a career take up categorical. But all those who want rad, anaes, PM, derm, RM, and many local grads who have not decided for their specialty try for prilim. I have also noticed that really below average programs that never get local grad for their categorical, have plenty of locals interviewing for prilim. Now if you want a surgical specialty, you can try for prilim first. I interviewed at a couple of programs which take their surgery residents only from those who did prilims there. Beaumount in Michigan is a classical example. So, prilim is not something very easy to get. This is what I found out.
