HI, I´VE GOT A QUESTION, IN MY HOME COUNTRY IN SOME INSTITUTIONS/HOSPITALS IF YOU WANNA DO A FELLOWSHIP YOU MUST DO IT ONLY IN A CERTAIN TIME, LET ME GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE.
IF YOU WANNA DO PLASTIC SURGERY, YOU HAVE TO STUDY 3 YEARS IN GENERAL SURGERY AND THEN CHANGE TO PLASTIC SURGER AFTER THE 3 YEAR REQUIREMENT FOR IT. IF YOU DON´T GET THE POSITION AT THE END OF YOUR 3RD YEAR, YOU CAN NOT STUDY THAT FELLOW AFTERWARDS. 
 SO I WONDER IF IT´S THE SAME IN USA??? OR YOU CAN DO IT LATER. FOR EXAMPLE AT THE END OF YOUR RESIDENCY?. F.EX. END GENERAL SURGERY (EVEN WORK FOR 1 YEAR OR SOMETHNG) AND THEN APPLY FOR WHATEVER SUBSPECIALITY I WANT??
I GUESS SO, BUT I WANNA CONFIRM IT. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND ANSWERS

You are eligible to fellowship at any time after residency. But some of the compititive fellowships are given only to those candidates who have worked in their institute for a variable period of time after their residency as senior resident or chief resident. Are you doing your residency now or are you working after your residency?

do you know how it is in gastroenterology (after IM)?? is it really so competitive?? what would i need to assure/make sure i´m gonna get this fellow???.

is it true that for a fellow like this, i would need preferently to be in a J1 visa or hold a GC?? (NO H1B).

about your question, neither one nor the other, i´m waiting for the match results this year, but i´ll probably have to go for the next match 2007
