Hello, Where can I get the list of unfilled programs for last year. Because I think it is quite likely that it'll be mostly the same programs that'll go unmatched this year too (correct me if I'm wrong)... Also, considering the fact that I probably will not choose to take up a average/below average community program ( = I'm not desperate to make it this year), what is the realistic chance of making it in post-match? Is it only the 'left-over' programs? (which, technically speaking they are). I mean I might not rank 2 of the 4 places I interviewed at....so what are the chances that I catch a (relatively) big fish in Postmatch? Thx....

i think it is almost the same chance that you may have to get a big fish if you are going fishing for the first time. Dont be under some wrong impression that vacant seat may go waste if it does not get filled in the post match scramble. The big programs have the set up to fill any seat at any time of the year. It is just simillar to filling a seat if an intern drops out. So a good program will not be much bothered if its seat does not get filled in the match. We are the one who are desperate if not matched. I dont support your idea of not ranking 2 programs for a dream that you may get a big shot in the post match or next year. The only reason for ot ranking a program is if you feel that you wont be able to happily complete you residency this year. Sometime the reaso why you got few interviews may be correctable like applying late, lack of US experience. If you think they are the cause you may have better chance next year. If the reasons are old graduate, low scores, need for visa, lack of publication and such things, your chances remain unpredictable even next year. There is always a factor of luck which depends on how much risk you can take. You may end up in a pestigeous institute next year, But we cannot predict it. I hope you understand what i am trying to say. Just remember that it is no easier next year or in the post match. Remember this when you decide which programs to rank. Generally speaking remaining unmatched is alway much worse than getting matched whereever it may be. This is my view

totally agreed with drmamu, even worse next year with another year away from graduated year. If you chose a mediocre program this year, next year you will have hands-on USCE, experience and you'll get paid for this.

it is up to you. But if you think that you have a better chance in scramble, you are wrong. Last y ~5500 img were actively in match from which ~2500 were unmatched. In match was offered ~21,000 position from which 92% were filled in match. In scramble you'll compete for 8% of initial position with nearly 50% of IMG applicants. GL

Well said vai, I would say that catching a big fish in post match is a too unlikely thing to become true. To me it looks rather like a day dream which has very less chance for coming into real life. Just dont misinterpret. Post match is for those people who did not get anywhere and for those programs who got nobody technically. Exceptions do occur. Look at it this way, People say that Albert Einstein's high iq was due to a frontal lobe tumor. How many of us would like to have have brain tumor to if we may become as intelligent as Einstein.

Year of graduation seems to be more important than what I had thought. I am also about 5years(2000 sept) from graduation as I did my residency in my country and joined the same institute as a chief resident for 1 year before I decided to come here. I got about 20 interviews and only 6 univeristy programs. But people who were recent graduates with simillar credentials as what I have, have got more interviews espeially larger number of university calls. No hard feeling for them, they deserve it if that is the policy of this country.I also feel that university programs tend to show lesser and lesser interest in you if you become an older graduate. Due to the large number of applicants this year, even some mediocar community programs have accepted policies that they wont call anyone bofore 2003 graduation for interview. So my limted experience showed me that I was more harmed by the fact that I am old graduate than anything else. 97,99, cs passed, gc holder, 1 international journal publication, 1 best research paper award, 1 intrentional conference presenation, 3 year residency in a national research institute in my country, 2 gold medal in medical school, 4months USCE, 4 USlor, 1 month of research inUS. I tried to put together as much possible and I thought that things would not be difficult. It turned out to be very tough when it came to university programs. I got rejection from threeforth of theplaces I applied-20 interviews out 80 I applied. I beleive that being 5 years after graduation definitely had a lot do with it even though my age is almost the same as that of a local graduate coming after medical school for residency as the medical school here is longer. But I have no complaints. This is not my country and whatever they give is a bonus.

i intend to go for community programs.i dont have g.c,so need h-1 which makes it even more difficult to get into univ.i did not think its a big issue.now i realise that .but at the end of the day with good score one can def end up with residency.hoping so.are you sure that clicical exp outside u.s is of no use for old grad, some say its ok as long as ur clinically active.
