hi there ppl

i really need ur guidance. im gonna remain unmatched this yr and was thinkin about tryin for research spots on j1. i want to do residency in internal medicine on h1. is it advisable to take j1 research? do i need a waiver to convert to j1 clinical or h1? how to get the waiver? is it tuf? do ppl get rejected? if i dont get waiver will i be able to petition and do residency on j1 clinical? do v have to do a certain number of months before we can apply for waiver? how long does it take?

i hope all u ppl with j1 research and matchin this yr will give ur input. also how is the country of waiver decided? i did mbbs in india and am an indian but i also have temporary residency in a country in middle east. i dont want to take j1 from the middle eastern country and only from india. do i have a choice as to which country i want my waiver to be from? i mean im not pickin a country on the globe as such - but in worst case scenario i wud rather prefer to do a 2yr job in india.

the thing is i have a 10yr multiple entry b1 - if i take up a research spot i gold plate my creds for next yr. but even if i dont im in decent shape for next match. but if i take research and get messed up in visa issues then its all lost. so should i go for overkill????

all advice is most welcome. those who want to remain anonymous pls email at doc_droc_apurva@yahoo.com

im sorry for postin this post here but visa forum no1 answered. and sorry for so many questions. when i get confused - i really get confused

god bless and may u all get residencies of your choices.. i assure u im not competiting in match this yr.. pls help

from what i understand if you are doing a research job on J 1 then you get the waiver here itself ...some paperwork and you dont have to go back to any country...it just gets converted from J 1 to H 1 and you are good to start work.

if anyone knows otherwise pleaase do post.

otherwise apurva, why dont you consult with a proper immi lawyer and get 100 % correct info ?
after all you dont want to take any chance here .

also these 2 websites are good...www.murthy.com
and www.perlitsh.com

good luck

hi apurva,

my husband did his residency on j1 and is currently doing his waiver job.

if u take a research on j1...what i think is that u will be able to do a residency on j1 only.to convert to H1...u will have to do waiver(that means work in a medically underserved area in the US for 3 years...or go back to ur home country for 2 years)

waiver jobs post residency are not that tough to find...they need physicians in the underserved areas...remember? u can search for a job on websites like 3rnet.com or contact recruiting agencies like practice.org(which charge a hell of a lot!)

anyways....best is to consult an immi lawyer(wat coolbabe suggested)...get all ur querries answered and avoid all kind of confusion as far as visa laws go.

for a non residency post like a job or research in basic sciences etc yu dont have to work for 3 years in underserved area.
a freind did a job in CDC on J 1 and now his tenure is getting over,,,he got a waiver letter without serving anywhere...and i have a friend who came here to do research on J 1 and subsequently his univ/college agreed to sponsor H 1 and now he is on H 1 without doing a waiver jobb.
only if you are doing residency on J1 are the laws for waiver so difficult'
otherwise its simple to get a waiver letter.
