How important or valuable passing step 3 is in securing residency, aside from visa issues? Does it increase the chances of geting matched? please post your opinion.

well, PD & other faculty members ask about the scores.. in my case it was lower than step 1,2 so they cheer you up than it's not easy to score high before the residency.. some ask - what's happened ? why it's lower than the previous steps? so, i think every one gets hisher own conclusion..

It depends... Aside from visa issues I dont think is that important unless you have a good score (better to have it with a good score, second would be not having it at all and third have it with bad score).. .sounds logic? Also in the situation that you have time...it is definetely better to have step 3 done than doing nothing, that way you dont have a "gap" and nobody will tell you during the interviews " i see a gap of x amount of time...what did you do from this month to this month?" Some residents during my interviews advised me to take it when i get into residency because i would score much higher, first year of IM really prepares you well for that but they also told me that at that point nobody cares for step 3 score anymore, just pass. hope it helps

Just pass it in your first attempt..Nobody cares about the step 3 scores, so even if you have a 75 and you have passed in your 1st attempt , you are good to go..It is a positive sign

Correct - not taking it is better than it showing up that you didn't pass on the first attempt.

One of the reasons why my first choice offered me a prematch slot was they saw that I had passed it in my first attempt..The PD said "thats great--so we dont have to worry about that now"...Im sure most of you will do well..Its very straightforward test..lot easier than step 2.
