hi ,

I'm IMG from asia in dilemma to apply for canadian immigration on point system.
For landed canadian immigrant ,Is this way possible to

do residency in USA---> do med practice in US ????

Is it legally possible.?is there any advantage of being a candian immigrant to do med practice in US ?I have heard some IMG canadian immigrant docs r doing this.
as u know,Getting H1B & green card of USAfor IMGs is very complicated & long exhausting journey & candian system is tough to start practising even after residency in IM from US..

I urgently need ur advice as i have to a/f Candian immigration in a few days.

thanks

Are you sure that you still have to pass Canadian registration exams to be able to practise there even though you'll be a US board certified specialist? I'm not so sure about that. I think being board certified in the US should be enough credentials to practise in Canada. I'm not sure about this, but it would surprise me if this were not the case.

Make sure that you can actually practise in the US across the border while you're living in Canada as a canadian national. If you can, and if that's what you want from life, than go for it, but don't put all your eggs in one basket without making sure that this is something you'll actually be allowed to do, and even if it's allowed, something you'd want to do. You'll be a US certified doctor... why would you want to live a difficult life like that... just worth a thought

well , i think tht u still need to pass canadian exam after doing ur fellowship or residency frm US to practice in canada....i dont knw the details but a distant relative of mine has fellowship in oncology/hematology frm US still he needed to pass canadian exam to get job ...but he didnt hv canadian immigration...he had J 1 visa and he went to canada for job ...

well my query is slightly different frm urs...

i m an IMG , me and my husband has already applied for canadian immigration last yr n we expect to get it this yr....this is what i want to know....if i get the immigration and I land in canada n everything , after tht i go to US for my residency....then what shall i do to prevent canada frm cancelling my immigration as i read tht after u become canadian immigrant u hv to spend 2 yrs out of 5 in canada and if u dont they cancel ur immigration.....obviously when i will b doing resideny i will b living in states , i wont b able to live in canada...so can i do sumthing abt it???

my first priority will b to get H1 /green card n stay in US but if i dont get it , then i want canada as a back up for me...coz i dont want to b back to asia after my residency/fellowship....

I am a canadian landed immigrant and currently living in UK as immigrant. I have passed Canadian Evaluation and Qulalifying Exam part1. I was in last years Canadian match but unable to secure and residency position. You must have already known that img can only apply for second match in which leftover residency positions are offered and their are like 700 candidates for about 100 unwanted positions (mainly FM).

You can apply for J1 visa from Canada for US residency and after completion come back and try to practice for two years and go back and do the fellowship. If you get full registration to practice in Canada after their assessment of your training, then you might as well explore oppurtinities to get funded position of fellowship in Canada. You can always go back to US. Depends which country you want to make your homeland unless you chose to be a Gypsy.

If you are interested only in US then why are you spending your energies to get Canadian immigration. Just study hard for your exam and get good score and go for H1 visa in whichever specialty you get it.

I love Canada and Canadian values even though I am studying for USMLE exams my ultimate goal is to come back and settle in Canada. I know most people at the early stage wants to keep their option open and wants to get some special licence with which they can practice everywhere is not realistic approach. In Canada each province has its own policy for registratons. Most of the US residency program are acceptable by royal college of physicians and surgeons Canada but not all (i.e. Cardiac surgery, Neurosugery etc). My specialty is Surgery and I dont know about medical speciatlies.

I hope it answer you questions.

I'm not interested in migrating anywhere, I was just commenting based on my preceptions. I personally plan to come back home inshallah when I complete my training.

It occurs to me that a US board certified doctor would be quite in demand in Canada, so in the short term, why not just plan your US residencies and fellowships really well, and apply for a Canadian citizenship when your a few years shy of completing that process. Surely Canada would give preference to your immigration application if you were a qualified specialist. Trying to reconcile immigration issues with your training in the US might cause both to suffer.

I think it is naive to say that US board certified are quite in demand in Canada. There are people who have completed their US residency and are back in Canada with board certificate and still jobless. It depends what specialty you are trained in. What are demands in Canadian job market, you will get a temporary licence to practice after your evaluation and after certain years you will get full registration for which you have to pass their licencing exams.

If you work/train in US with Canadian immigration but no nationality, you are again risking your Canadian immigration because they need your physical presence in Canada for certain continuous period before granting citizenship. Take your actions after asking yourself where you want to live at the end of the day and carefully plan. I can see you have your own perceptions but you have to explore the real facts.

to Ujalla's question

I know one person who was Canadian immigrant but left US medical residency program because she did not want to sacrifice her Canadian immigration and Citizenship.

If you are married to Canadian Citizen then things are different, as each day spent outside Canada when are are living with Canadian citizen will probably count as a day you spend in Canada. You need to take professional advice from a immigraton lawyer. I wonder one option is probably if one of you live in Canada and complete residency requirement for citizenship and the other can complete US residency program might work for you. I have seen your step1 score which is great and you should go for H1 visa for US probably the best option in your case.
