For those who have taken the exam. How do you feel about NBME, Qbank and real USMLE? In term of difficulty and standard?

I have been doing kaplan q bank, yes...i see improvement in my score in qbank, but does it really reflect a real improvement, sometimes i believe the improvement is because i did so many of similar questions, hence, improvement in score. but does kaplan questions really help me in real usmle?

a few of my friends said that USMLE questions style and kaplan style is different...being able to answer well in kaplan dont mean you can answer well in usmle?

so what do you all think? those who have took the exam....mind to share?

By the way, what about NBME? i took NBME...i felt that i did many questions correctly...but my score is only 440, why? i find this score to be lower than what i am expecting....

Hi Watermen and Unfortunate,

I´m certainly in no position to give you advice on how to improve your score, since I´m not even sure whether I passed my USMLE (and even if I did, it will only be with a low score). But this was a question that I had always wanted to get answered before I took my exam, so I´ll just give you my opinion on that:

1.) Kaplan´s qbank is definitely worth doing ! But make sure you read the explanations on the questions - often they contain the necessary details for the actual exam. Alot of times, the qbank offers 1-step questions. You know, the type where they give you the symptoms and you have to figure out what the patient has. The Step 1 qs, however, are mainly more-step questions. Something along the line of: you get a long vignette about the history of the patient and the symptoms. But instead of being asked WHAT the patient has, you might be asked how the drug of choice works. So you´ll have to be able to make the connection between symptoms and illness, have to know the drug of choice, and its mechanism of action. Of course, sometimes you´ll just get a long vignette, and at the end they ask you something more or less unrelated to the actual case.

2.)On the exam, I found the pathology, physiology, pathophysiology & anatomy qs to be very much like qbank.

3.) The questions on the exam are usually a bit longer than the qbank qs, & often offer more answer choices.

4.) The NBME qs are the closest you´ll find to the actual exam. Some USMLE-takers (including myself) have reported finding qs from their NBME form or USMLE CD (the one you get sent by mail, after having applied) on the exam. That just goes to show you that these qs aren´t really retired qs afterall.

5.) From what I´ve seen, the qbook qs are also a good question source. I haven´t done those myself, but looked through the book a friend of mine bought. These qs are categorized by subjects, so they´re especially good for reviewing after having studied a subject.

Unfortunate: Look at your NBME score sheet & work on your weak subjects - either by reviewing it from a book, from FA, or at least by redoing the qbank qs on this subject. Of course, while working on your weak areas, don´t neglect your better ones. Also make a note of those subjects, you think they´ve asked alot of qs on in your NBME form. And then go and read up on these - chances are, you´ll encounter them on the USMLE.

But like I said earlier: I´m not a 99 candidate. Not even close ! For me it´s all about passing the USMLEs. So these are just my 2 cents - for whatever they´re worth. wink
