Hi Reet,
I had just browsed through the last page of your prep journal - honestly, I think it sounds like youīre doing fine ! You seem to have hit a phase that I experienced too during my last month: weariness. Being tired and worn-out. Somehow just wanting to get it over with, yet feeling like youīre not quite there yet. This can actually be pretty harmful: it caused me to loose a few precious days, during which I was physically sitting at my desk, but psychcologically not really present - so I didnīt get as much done as I should have. Maybe I interpreted it wrong and you havenīt really hit this point at all. But if you have: try to get over it asap !
I know Iīm repeating myself: but if you havenīt done so already, take one of the NBME forms as soon as you have gone through most of the material. Work on those weak-points of yours, which NBME will point out to you. Then take another NBME form - you will most likely have improved yourself; this will be a big psych-booster !
Donīt put off going through your notes until the last day. Go through them at least a few days before the exam - since these are the notes YOU took (as opposed to someone else in a book, for example), you will most likely do a better job at recalling them during your exam. IF you havenīt put off on going through them until itīs almost too late !
Every night as you go to bed during that last month, take something youīve really been meaning to study along with you. I donīt mean reading a chapter in a book, I mean memorizing the ketogenic and glucogenic amino acids on one night, the grampositive bugs on another, etc. I started doing this about 8-10 nights before my exam & I can tell you I wish I had done that earlier. Itīs just so much easier to only have to memorize the P450 Inducers and Inhibitors, for example. And your brain probably wonīt let you fall asleep until you have. And while youīre taking a shower the next morning, recall the inducers and inhibitors.
Of course, since I donīt even know whether I passed or not, Iīm probably not the ideal candidate to give any real advice. But these are some of the things I wish I had done alot earlier, which I found to be really helpful. Remember: DO NOT PUT OFF ON THINGS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE !!! (You will probably regret it later on !)
Finally here are two of the mnemonics that really came in handy during my exam - the inducer/inhibitors I found in this forum - maybe you (or someone else) will recall one of these during your exam and get an extra point or two through them (like I did):
P450-Inhibitors: (can lead to Intox by other drugs taken) I C KEGS "going down"
I - INH C-Cimetidine K-Ketoconazole (& other -conazoles) E-Erythromycin G-Grapefruit S-Sulfonamides
P450-Inducers: (can lead to other drugs not working as well enough) Boston Redsox Gotta Play Quality Competition "to go up"
B-Barbiturates R-Rifampin G-Griseofulvine & Glucocorticoids P-Phenytoin Q-Quinidine C-Carbamazepine & *donīt forget: alcohol is an inducer as well !* (think of sports-fanatics sitting in a bar, watching the game & drinking beer.)
(I realize that there are alot more inducers and inhibitors, but trust me: I was able to answer almost all of the questions to this topic with the ones from the mnemonic - plus: if you know these, it will be so much easier to just add a few more should you stumble accross more)
Defects of the complementsystem (--> resulting in Immunodeficiancies): (read as a poem)
C1,4,2: SLE & Glomerulonephritis too !
C3 or 5: Pyogenic infectionīs alive !
C6,7,8: Neisseria await !
One more thing: I have found that they like to test the + and - sense RNA-Viruses. I guess this is important, since the +-sense ones can be translated at the ribosomes, whereas the - ones need an RNA-RNA-Polymerase. Luckily I had found 2 "stories" on these, so I never had problems recalling them:
Think of (American) college guys - frat boys - there are 2 types: the (positive) "cool" guys & the (negative) snobby rich guys. Both groups are throwing a party:
The (POSITIVE) cool guys: have RETRO-music, with lots of FLAVOR - wearing TOGAs, drinking CORONAs. Theyīre from CALI and REO, and love PICO (some "chick"). (* the ones from CALI and REO love PICO, right ? Well then itīs no wonder that theyīre NAKED !*)
Now to get to the (NEGATIVE) snobby rich studentīs party: they never leave their home w/o their FILO-Fax. Since theyīve got money, theīve rented an ARENA and some (Playboy-)BUNnies. They even have a DJ to ORTHO- and PARAMYXO the music, so they can dance all night. Too bad for them that the police come with their dogs, whoīve got RABIES (Rhabdovirus) & start chasing the guys, who now wish they were in the Bermuda-DELTA !!! (* The BUNNIES hop around in CIRCLES in the ARENA, wishing they too were at the Bermuda-DELTA ! --> Bunyavirus, Arenavirus and Deltavirus are circular !*)
This might be a bit confusing, but -like I said- this story helped me remember the positive and negative sense RNA-Viruses. Maybe because I actually checked to see whether all of them were included and thus went over them - whatever the reason, it worked for me !
Reet, I wish you best of luck for your last month of studying & for your exam ! Keep us updated on how things are going !

well i suggest you should revise the core subjects thoroughly one last time, atleast pathophysio part, it will serve yu more than solving mcq's, however u may solve a limited # of mcq's on a daily basis but with proper explanation, trust me yu can make a whole big difference to ur score during the last month, so don't underestimate it!
and yeah you may also take nbme during this time. Good Luck

Take some reliable diagnostic test which will give you subject-wise performance result (I took kaplan simulated CD test) and then work on your weakest subjects. In last 2 weeks (or maybe, even 1 month) you shouldn't do MCQs - you should read very concise reviews, in last 4 days I have read FA.

Reet...busy_mom,kar,p53 and ssrpk have put it all into perspective. Not much left for me to add...
I would, however stress on the importance of the timing of the NBME.Make sure you take a couple of forms and also delegate enough time to your weaknesses as pointed out by your performance profile.Donot neglect your strong areas...going over pathophys in the last few days(as ssrpk points out) is essential. It is also a good idea to keep doing about 20-30 questions each day.
All the very best with your prep Reet....believe in all the hard work you have put in.

hey reet
I am stressed out too.I am revising things like crazy and still feel I am way too behind. But the most frustrating part is that I am at a stage where I feel like vomiting now.I want to improve my scores on nbme but at the same time I feel so tired and over whelmed.Sometimes I feel like "lets give it tomorrow and get it over with".But then I think "I dont want to regret on a single thing this time".
I am scoring very very average on nbme.May be many people on this forum will think I am complete loser to have such a low aim. Many people here dont even consider it a passing score .But This is my threshold.I have put in everything I have till now ,and still I am having a very very average score.I just want to maintain this score as this is a fortune for me.but this last month is so emotionally distressing. You want to postpone,u want to read more,u want to score more. But then I know I will lose concentration.
I am not at a stage to advice you but yes share the agonizing feeling of desperation and sometimes I just sit and close my eyes and pray to God"JUST DO A MIRACLE FOR ME.IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME BUT NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU.I AM AT THE POINT WHERE I HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL MY EFFORTS.AND WHERE MAN IS EXHAUSTED,GOD'S WORK STARTS.I AM CRAZY TO HOPE THAT I CAN SCORE A 90 ALTHOUGH MY NBME SAYS I CANT,Q BANK SAYS I CANT,BUT WHEN I READ THE QURAN,I KNOW NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH YOU.SO DO A MIRACLE FOR ME AND GIVE ME A 90 BCZ ITS ONLY YOU WHO CAN DO THAT IN MY CASE".
I dont know but hope is all what keeps me moving and this last month i know I HAVE TO PRAY.All the best and U will do it,I am sure of that.

hey malinda..
dont worry friend,, ur aim is high... and YOU wWILL ACHIEVE IT SOON..HE is watching you ,ur hard work.. USMLE is so vague in score.. u never know --full prepared persons getting failed.. and who never paid so much attention getting high scores.
its a matter of ATTEMPT,, uR attempt on EXAM day matters a lot.. so PRAY well and keep ur mind in peace.. forget about ASSESSMENT SCORES.. just think how much u know at this time..i think we have been studying for a long... we do know alot stuff..so revise that and do questions peacfully.
LUCK IS URS??? 90 or 99
best of luck.

malinda...Miracles happen to those who believe in them...and you do believe!Keep that faith strong!
You still have an entire month.Exhaustion and saturation are part and parcel of this marathon of an exam.Don't let it get to you.Try not to let this feeling of despair overwhelm you.I wish you the very best!
