hi! i would like to ask for your humble opinion regarding my situation... i took my step1 exam in october 2005, step2CK in november 2005 and step2CS in december 2005. i got 99 in the first two exams, and i just found out (through the eras trick) that i passed my CS exam. however, since i got my step1 score only last november, i applied quite late to the different residency programs. and i applied to only 15 programs (because i thought i would be wasting my money by applying to more programs). hence, i only got one interview invitation (from rush university in chicago). my dilemma is...should i rank the one and only residency program that invited me to interview, or should i just apply again for next year's match? i actually liked rush university, but i haven't gotten to visit other hospitals and see whether their residency programs are better. well, if i decide to apply again next year, i will see to it that i apply as soon as ERAS opens on sept.1. another advantage of not participating in this year's match is that i will be able to take the step3 exam late this year and probably get an H-1 visa when i start residency next year. so what do you think i should do?

yes rank the programme.apply for step-3 and take a date.if you get selected in that one programme, you can ask them if they can sponcer you h-1 and you can get ur result of step-3 by the start of ur residency date.just in case you dont match then you can take part in scamble you ahve a very good chance.dont waste an year. by the way how could you manage to take both exams in a span of 2 months?when did you start prep?how did you go about this whole ordeal?

brown, i took the national physician board exam in august 2005. so i needed just a few more weeks to review for the step1 and step2ck, since most of the reviewers for our board exam are the same ones used for the USMLE (e.g., BRS series, etc.) i even read the Kaplan reviewers for the local board exam! for the step2cs, i studied for about a week, and practiced the cases with friends for two days. by the way, if i rank rush university now and get matched in march, i will NOT be able to take the step3 exam before i start my residency. which means that i won't be able to apply for an H-1. you see, i can only take step3 if i apply for next year's match (i will take it when i go back to the US for the interviews).

apurva, every year, rush university's IM program accepts 2-3 applicants from my university (the university of the philippines or UP). the asst. program director during my interview told me that they've been accepting UP graduates for the past 15 years, and they have had 5 to 6 chief residents who were from UP. so i guess this explains why i got an interview invitation from them.

im sure u can give s3 right now and pass easily seein ur performance in s2 and too recent. but maybe u wont be able to get to same score as u wud have got had u prepared longer. catch 22!! depends on ur priority - gettin in this yr in rush or h1 in good program next yr. i had a slightly similar scenario. i chose the latter option - hope that helps. apurva

aimudia, if i will aim for an H-1 next year, i will apply to good programs that sponsor H-1. rush does sponsor H-1, i personally know an IM resident there who is under that visa type.

hi jrdagooc! how come you never tried going into my pinoymle@yahoogroups.com mailing list? hehe... anyways... don't waste a year... RUSH takes in only fastrackers and fresh grads and UP(like you!) hehe... so rank it... and don't waste a year... you'll find something in the post match in case you don't get in RUSH University... this is my opinion... remember, put your foot in first... or... do what one person i know did.. get a preliminary position... (I know this is hard.. with all the freaking visa issues... coz you might end up with a J visa) and then reapply the ff year while doing your prelim.. I'm sure you'll have a better chance... Getting a J is not that bad.. the two Filipinos from UP-PGH presently in their first year are in a J visa anyways.. and there will be waivers available... so don't get hung up just because you want that OH SO PRECIOUS H1b... believe me, getting a job after to sponsor you for a GC is just as hard as getting a waiver... Hasta Luego.. hope you join my group... dun ka na lang magpost at magtanong, mas maraming pinoy dun na nakakaintindi sa sitwasyon mo... meron ding mga residente na sa USA.. hehe.. good luck!

Hey, dont waste a year. You can give step 3 by march and you can get a h1 visa. if you dont match you have 2 options in the post match. Join a prelim medicine program. there are a few which go unmatched every year. 2nd option is to join a categorical medicine or family practice program and reapply next year. the advantage is that next year you will have USCE which is a big plus on ur CV.

hi trishue! are you now a resident in the US? are you from UP too? how did you know that rush takes in only fasttrackers and UP grads? but there have been exceptions: two years ago, they took in a grad from the university of santo tomas. anyway, i think J1 would be OK with me. but there are just too many horror stories about the waiver. is it really that bad? i've just tried joining the pinoymle group, and my membership's still pending. thanks for informing me about it.

no, i cant take the step3 exam before i start residency in july, if ever. i am now back in the philippines, and the next time i'll go to the US is when i start my residency in july. so the only chance i'll get an H-1 is when i apply for next year's match.

alam mo kasi jrdagooc... kung UST ka and you want to get in rush, not only do you have to be a fast tracker, but you have to have been a cum/magna cum as well, and with great scores... kilala ko yung UST dyan kasi upperbatch sa akin yan at kabarkada ng mga kaibigan ko... there are actually UST peeps who are being offered prematch positions in RUSH (but only the good ones...) someone i know rejected it because He's going thru the couple's match. pero mas malakas lang talaga ang effect ng UP sa RUsh (it is UP country) hehe... Welcome to PINOYMLE... i got a prematch and will start on July this year, and I'm from UST.
