Hi guys, I have been offered to do an Externship and I would like to know what kind of Visa is needed for it. I come from Germany and I don't need a Visa for a visit as a Tourist but I heard that one needs a B1/2 Visa for an Externship. Is this kind of Visa easy to get? What do I need for this Visa ? Does it take a long time till I get it? Am I allowed to work on the weekends and earn some money with this kind of Visa? Please help!

I am not certain what visa you will need for an externship, but I do know on a tourist visa, you are not allowed to work. Sorry But good luck with your externship.

yunus, B1 visa seems to be okay, and from what I just found out, there's is a way to get a work authorization....just do some online search on it! Basically you have to contact your closest embassy in Germany (good old Germany) and ask about how to apply for it....from waht I saw (e.g. Frankfurt) the waiting time currently is 17 days....not bad...ask them about the work permit! Sorry, that's all I can tell you! Gruesse an die alte Heimat, Sabine

Yunus, come on Tourist visa and do your externership, but you will not be able to work, so bring some money with you and do not expect that you can work here. Tocket

Tocket, the problem is that many people told me that you are not allowed to do an externship with a tourist visa. Tocket what are you doing right now?

yunus, I did my externship on a b2 visa( tourist) and nobody cared. The hospital was totally fine with this, because they don't pay me any money anyway. At customs you say you are here on a vacation ,works perfectly. And if you are afraid take B1(business).You are not allowed to work on both. And I wouldn't recommend it anyway. Here you have to work hard, especially if you are considering comming back and if you need letters of recommendation. On my externship in gen surgery I worked EVERY day and days were loooong.Find a hospital, whre they will be able to give you a place to stay so that you can save some money and come and learn, not needing to work on weekends for money. good luck!
