Its when you have the obligation to break confidentiality if you believe: 1. the patient is a harm to himself 2. the patient is a harm to others. e.g. If the patient tells you he is going to go home and kill his wife, you can't keep quiet about this. Infact you MUST intervene! You have to tell the wife in a way that will keep her safe, but also so she won't kill him when he comes home either... The best thing to do is tell the wife to come to your office... If you simply tell her to go to the police, you won't know if she went or not. Hope this helps.

Tarasoff I: Protect the patient's wife etc from being killed by active intervention Tarasoff II: Prevent the wife from blowing the patient's head off at the door

Do we have to know the names of all these court rulings or just the principle behind them? (asking because there are so many others!)

Tarasoff 1: WORN the person going to be harmed by the patient (don't worry about confidentiality). Tarasoff 2: PROTECT the person going to be harmed from the patient. This can be achieved by restraining of the patient or by calling police. You don't need to worry about protecting the patient from his intended victim!
