A 73-year old woman has difficulty concentrating and demonstrates some mild immediate memory problems. She has poor appetite, and a weight los of 24 lb in 6 weeks. She resists participation in recreational activities, and she wakes up at 4:00AM everyday and is unable to get back to sleep. Her condition is worsening on a daily basis. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?
A. Alcohol-related dementia
B. Dementia of Alzheimers type
C. Hypothyroidism
D. Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
E. Pseudodementia

B... dementia of alzeimer ds

accumulation of abnormal plaques and tangles in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. in old peolpe age above 65.

E Pseudo dementia

'depression with mild dementia in an elderly'...that's how I remember it atleast...correct me if I am wrong guys..

well i thought the same answer.....st first but dont know wht made think of alzeimer--in ques there is no indication of alzeimer..

Yes, its E. Good Job.
I didn't come across Pseudodementia in the Kaplan readings, but got this Q on it in Kap Q's! I also thought it may be alz. at first, but its Pseudodementia.
As per Kaplan:
Pseudodementia is more appropriately described as major depression in an elderly person. She has all the symptoms of depressive disorder (sleep difficulties, appetite, and weight problems, concentration problems, lack of interest in pleasurable activities) but none of the hallmarks of an organic condition.
