Was wondering if someone could clarify the concept of 'meiotic arrest' of follicles for me... I was under the impression that the follicles are arrested in Prophase (Diplotene) of Meiosis I till puberty and at puberty, they complete Meiosis I to enter Meiosis II but get arrested in Metaphase of Meiosis II until fertilisation ... So, in a 35 yr old female who is gravida I, the primary follicles in her ovary would be: 1. Arrested in metaphase of Meiosis II until they are ferilized OR 2. Arrested in prophase of Meiosis I Can some explain this?

yeah, Reet...I thought so too but I came across an explanation in Kaplan Qbank that says that it'll be prophase of Meiosis I... Anyone else wants to weigh in on this??

I think to enter metaphase of meiosis II ,FSH is required t o grow follice from 2nd follicle to graffian .During preg estrogen is very high and suppress GnRH so LH and fsh will be decrease. So it is arrested at prophase of meiosis I .Am i right ??????

before ovulation arrested in prophase of meisos 1. after ovulation complete meiosis 1 and enter metaphase meiosis 2. after fertilization complete meosis 2. in pregnancy, ovulation is suppressed by high levels of estrogens and feed back inhibition on gonadotropins will arrest the follicles in preovulatory stages that is prophase of meiosis 1. This is what I understand so far.

malinda's embryology sounds correct, because the most significant times would be birth-2 million primary oocytes, the 1st ovulation-40,000 primary oocytes and fertilization when she may have 480 secondary oocytes over her reproductive lifetime.
