I've been searching the internet many times to find if there is any info that tells you how to apply for an observership.
Till now I couldn't find relevant information though I scrubbed many websites. There is no such a page where you can apply online or you can download some forms to complete.
If there is any member doing an observership in US then this is the place where you can share with us your impressions. How to apply, what are the advantages/disadvantages .....
Thanks!

Hi admin,

that s an excellent idea. I haven t done any. But I will ask around. I could imagine that this is helpful to all of us.

Well at UCSD no observerships in Internal Medicine sad

BUT: Ortho
Inquiries regarding Medical Student rotations and externships with
UCSD's Department of Orthopaedics should be directed to:

Barbara Swapp
Office of Student Affairs
School of Medicine
(858) 534-1396
bswapp@ucsd.edu

Internship and Residency applicants should apply directly with the
Department of Orthopaedics - please see additional information below.

( see also http://medicine.ucsd.edu/ortho/rsdyhome.htm ).

------------------------------------------------------------------

The friends that I know are all still students and do rotations as clinical elctives. Thats different, right?

  #4

Observership is different then rotations because you are not a student.
Anyway thanks for the info !

Hi guys, the best way to get an observship is direct contact with program directory. Try to email them directly in the speciality and the hospitals around you.
the Secretary sometimes reply No without hesitation but if the program directory consider you no body is going to say no.
so try to email and tell him/her your story in short.
Good luck

There is no disadvantage to NOT doing an observership/externship. The benefit is that you, as an IMG, have some access to the US medical system, learning some of the ins and outs.

In the program that I work in, more IMG interns have not done an observership than have done. But this may be because most are hired right after graduation.

Good luck.

p.s. if the program coordinator tells you "no" to a request for an observership, it's because the program director told her too. Many hospitals will not let graduates of medical school perform an observership because you are a doctor, not a student any longer, and insurance regulations prohibit unlicensed physicians on the floors.

Also, if you need a visa to work, technically, you will need a visa to observe. :?

Hi there,
I have just come across this, hope it will be of help. It is with the UCSF's Pain Management Center :

"Other Educational Opportunities

Opportunities also exist for observational preceptorships of varying lengths. Visiting physicians, scientists, Physician's Assistants, physical therapists, pharmaceutical representatives, and others have joined us in this capacity. No direct patient care is permitted, but no special credentialing is required from the Dept of Anesthesia.

For additional information, please contact Director of Teaching, Dr Aimee Chagnon, at chagnon@itsa.ucsf.edu."
Good luck,
Andrea

How long does one undergo externship? :?:

Hi Rane - you don't have to do externship. If you do, it will vary depending on where you do it, what specialty, etc.

honestly i feel finding an observership/externship is based a lot on just going out there on your own and asking around. it may start out as a volunteer job at times--perhaps few hours a day, may be only couple days a week, but it's a start, and that can eventually turn into an observership or even an externship once the people you're are working around begin to realize your apptitude and potential. some people i know of who are doing externships started out in that way. they just kept going to all the hospitals in the area and kept asking. also it helps if you know someone in the profession. they can introduce you or get you started in some way. even working at someone's private practice is helpful, because clinics are affiliated with hospitals, and eventually you can find an externship/observership at a hosp. through this way.

those websites that claim they can arrange it all for you--haven't heard anything positive about them so far.

it's all about getting out there and making contacts..once people see your apptitude they are willing to help.

Well for me its a little hard to "getting out and making contacts".

What im interested in is a summer opportunity for international medical students.

A visa is not a problem in my case. The problem is that i dont want to get there and not find anything to do. I know absolutely nothing about research, so i dont know if ill be able to do anything even if they let me do it voluntarely! I dont want to count tubes and take care of mice. Are they willing to teach me how to do some usefull things? Why would they take the effort to teach me if im leaving in a couple of months?

Are there any clinical opportunities? voluntarely or unvoluntarely i dont care, i just need someone with a stethoscope to teach me what to do and how things work.

these programs are there....all you need to do is find them. i know personally of a person who recently went through the Yale program...it's all on their site, and it's only for students...so if your still in med. school, go for it.

people will be willing to teach you if you're genuinely ready to learn. so what if it's for few months.. you think you're the only one...lots of people come and go with a few months on their hands. point is to learn in the time you have and university programs do offer this.

Its a relief to hear that there are others doing it. Ill try to do some more googling and searching and hopefully ill share with you guys what i come out with.

For now, are there particular universities who are known to be more international friendly than others?

Thanks alot silver.
