As an IMG and a novice to the whole process, I am perlexed by the various terms passed around in the forums- externship, observership, internship, clinical experience, electives (and what else?). Could someone take the trouble to elaborate on these please? These terms may mean differently in other countries. Are these desired qualities looked for in applicants? It sounds ridiculous to expect an IMG with say 4 years of experience in medical and surgical units to just stand around and observe others do ward work & procedures. I suppose there is no better way to gague an IMG's qualities. Is there a minimum duration for these stints? Do these have to be done at the hospital one plans to apply to or would others recognise them too. Thanks. shaking head

I know that Portland (OR) -area is very IMG-unfreindly place for observership. I guess Seattle the same. If you will call or e-mail them you will get nothing. But If you find some personal contact there is a chance to get observership.
