hi,
i'm an img from paris,france,and i pass my step 1 (1st try) with a low score,188/77.I have 2 questions:

-1-can i have emergency medicine or internal medicine if my step 2 score is higher or is it a desperate situation?

-2-is it more important for the residency choice to have low step 1 score at your the 1st attempt,or a good score at the 2nd try?

thx everybody,a sad img

life is so strange sometimes when u think that lifestyle and career can depend on which column u put the cross into during the exam

hi, i feel my post might depress u. but if ur an img and have score below 80 u must try to get above 90 in step2. otherwise it will b difficult. from my seniors i know thos who got above 90 in their 2nd attempt got better residencies than the ones who got below 80 in their 1st attempt. so take ur time and try 2 get a gud score in 2. by the way did u take nbme. whats ur score?

Dear paris md,

I am in the same situation as you, I was working and studying for usmle and my score in both is not very high. I did Emergency Medicine in my country Germany and now I will be happy with Family practice. Forget your dream and accept what you will get. We are not home and we can not choose.

You can choose in your country but here the situation is crazy.

hi Tocket,

thx for ur answer, but tell me...after e few times as family practice medical doctor,is it impossible to change your specialty??And you chose family practice because you did not have any choice at all for other specialties (in any areas)or because you wanted to be in a certain areas(i mean maybe you prefer taking family practice in california instead of internal medicine in a rural area or in a less popular state?).
Can you tell me ur scores please.
And finally, did you have some letters of recommandations or US clinical experience before?

Hi to everyone, I have a friend who has low scores in both of the exams, first attempt, IMG with PR and he had like 12 IM interviews and 2 in family practice.

In my opinion is better to have low scores than failed attemps, and be realistic when applying.

By the other hand, everything counts in your resume, try to get as many LORs as you can, try to do some research or HANDS ON internships.

Good luck!!

hi lobitodemar, i think ur fnd is one of the luckiest to get so many interviews. what r his scores? r they both below 80? one of my seniors got 77 & 79 in first attmpt. he was trying for residency since 2yrs. he also got 6 to 10 interviews each time but was not selected.

I think the truth is you need to do well on step2. Spend some time on forums, trying to figure out what people use to prepare (the fact that you didn't do nbme test for step 1 probably means you don't have enough information -- try to use forums to guide you!) It seems that NBME test very accurately predicts your score (worked for me both times) -- study as much as you can and THEN access yourself with NBME. If you are not getting the score you want -- don't take the real exam yet! study more. I am sure if you can do well on Step 2 you'll be fine. All the best to you!

ps and don't forget to do usmle world questions well.

Hi ,

Hey a scre below is nt the end of ur dreams!!!!I am not supporting the notion that scres below 80 and still u will get a residency comfortably. It will be a bit difficult than others.A scre above 90 in step 2 will be a lot helpful..most of the programs go on step 2 scre fr IMG'S so finish ur step 2 ..try ur best gettin a descent scre. This forum is a great one..keep following the step2 ck in this forum and also find out where u can do observorship, externships, research. With most of the people having scres in an average of 85 and more the emphasis by PD's is movin on USCE ..and they are becoming a definitely plus point.

So try ur best get step 2 ck done and being an IMG step 3 is important too and if u are done by sep 1st week ebverything uou are in for a good position in to match even though ur step 1 is low.

Hmm ER by itself even if u get good scres is a bit tough fr IMG's.I am not sure about what the scre req are fr it.IM definitely yes..an average scre of 85 ijn both be confident u will make it.

All the best

What are the chances in IM program with scores of 84/85. When u say one has a chance in IM programs, which programs are u talking about. is it community hospitals or decent community based, univ affiliated ones. One more thing, How do we decide which programs are good. just from the infor on their website or is there some other way also?

I am also kinda frustrated with my score on step1 203/83. Many people told me I should forget completely about residency in USA, others encouraged me to take step2 and do some US experience... don't know what to do!!

Honestly, I don't know if we low scorers have a chance but I guess luck plays a part besides your application
