phenytoin is an antiepileptic drug so the basic mechanism is inhibition of nerve impulse so that no seizures occur . In normal impulse transfer the presynaptic neuron gets depolarised by sodium influx which finally leads to opening of calcium channels , now the opening of calcium channels resuls in movement of calcium ions inside the presynaptic neuron , the neurotransmitter released at the synaptic cleft is directly related to the amount of calcium moved inside the presynaptic membrane ! this is the way impulse transfers.

but what phenytoin do is, firstly it acts on the presynaptic neuron & prohibit it from being depolarised by inhibiting sodium channels ! secondly it reduces the influx of calcium ions thereby inhibiting the release of neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft.

if there is anything wrong or if there is more clerification please object ! it would be my pleasure.
