Hi guys... i was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to offer some kind of advice regarding any of these internal medicine residency programs. Geisinger health system in danville, PA The graduate hospital, Phily Southern Illinois university school of medicine (which i thought was a university based program, but found out it was community hosp, univ affiliated...still a very nice program from what i saw there) SUNY at stonybrook NYMC westchester medical center Mercy hospital of pittsburgh JHU/sinai hospital of baltimore I was also wondering ... out of these programs, is it wise to rank any of the community based univ affiliated hospitals above the two universtiy based programs...SUNY and NYMC? My plans after residency is to do a fellowship. From what i read in scutwork, these two programs work you to the bone....but experience wise u get exposure to a lot of cases. Any opinions or advice regarding these topics would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Good luck to all. bye

i personally think that with the programs u ve ,u should rank univ ones first. i interviewed at stony brook and westchester.they r nice programs with v good fellowship oppurtunities and they r located in nice places. siu is a nice program too with some fellowship pos. so it should come 3rd. regarding the other community ones, rank the ones with in house fellowship better than others. i dont know at all about the other programs u ve.just go ahead by ur gut decision.good luck actually i m too confused with ranking of the community ones i ve got as most of them look all the same reg fellowship oppurtunities.any ways i m writin down my list.if u or somebody can help,i m pretty much decided with the top 5 but confused with the others.maybe u or somebody can help 1.suny stony brook 2.westchester,valhalla 3.suny downstate 4.nassau univ med center 5.temple/conemaugh valley, johnstown,pa confusion starts from here 6.st barnabas, livingston,nj 7.long island coll hospital, brooklyn 8.mt. sinai(elmhurst) 9.nymc(richmond), staten island 10.monmouth,nj 11.flushing,ny 12. md gen hosp, baltimore 13.pr george hosp, cheverly,md

If you want fellowship then rank the university programs higher. To ssandhu: Your ranking is fine......(including the confusion part!) To rema:if I were you I would rank like this:SUNY stony Brook,Westchester,SIU,Geisinger, graduate,Mercy,Sinai Baltimore.

Thank you guys so much for your advice. I really appreciate it...especially ssandhu and malaysian...thank you for taking the time to write such an elaborate reply. Ssandhu...i'm sorry, but i have no idea as to how to rank your programs...congratulations on getting a fair number of interviews though. I was losing sleep over my 7 hospitals...so i can imagine what you're going through. Anyway, just wanted to tell u that your advice really helped...and i totally agree with it. Good luck to all and take care. bye.

Hi malaysian...this question is for you. In case you read this, please post an answer. After reading ssandhu's advice on ranking and judging from my experience at the interviews, i ranked the above programs as follows... 1. SUNY , stonybrook 2. Westchester, valhalla 3. SIU 4. Mercy 5. Geisinger 6. Sinai hospital, Baltimore 7. Graduate Now, i noticed you ranked Geisinger and Graduate higher... was there any particular reason for that? Were you going by the fellowships offered by these hospitals? I was just curious...anyway, once again, thank you for your advice. bye.

Yes you're right. Geisinger has competitive fellowship in their program like G.I. and Cardio. and rheumatology whereas Graduate has Pulmonary and G.I. in addition they have good fellowship placements outside their own programs as well. But its not just fellowship placement which plays an important role. there are also many other factors which you should consider: type of visa they sponsor, goegraphical location, what was your opinion on the program etc........since I give alot of importance to fellowship placement my ranking was exclusively from that angle.I agreed with ssandhu on his/her ranking completely......I guess fellowship is very important to him/her as well and so our opinions were the same about his/her list. Someone else who is from N.Y. and has a family would put the programs goegraphically closest to his/her home higher on the ROL.While another individual who wants H1 will rank all H1 sponsoring programs over J1 sponsoring programs. So it varies from individual to individual!!!

Hi malaysian...thank you for clearing my doubt... . You are absolutely right...so many factors play in how each of us rank these programs. In my case, however , i am just placing importance on the academics and fellowship opportunities... since i was here for the past twenty years and therefore have no visa problems, and also,i dont have to worry about family etc. Anyway, thanks a lot for such a quick reply. Good luck to u and best wishes. bye
