What is the effect of Carbon Monoxide on oxygen affinity to Hb?

  #2

i think left shifts the curve as well as decreases the o2 carrying capacity

correct me if wrong

  #3

yes u right sturge.it decreases HB affinity to O2

  #4

A left shift in the curve(dec 2,3 DPG) means its more difficult for tissues to extract oxygen. Is that not indicative of increased affinity of O2 to Hb?

Why is it that in CO poisoning, when CO is competing wth O2 for Hb sites there is also an inc from normal of the Hb-affinity for oxygen?

binding of co to the hb, increases the binding affinity of o2

  #6

increased affinity for 02= more difficult for tissues to extract 02....and that is what left wards shift means....so in the presence of CO watever 02 is attached to the Hb will find it harder to dissociate to the tissues...means decreased 02 delievery to the tissues...giving supplemental 02 will be beneficial as the 02 will dissociate from the Hb only at high partial pressures

good job bluntknife,,, CO causes al eft shift in the O2 binding curve.... so O2 remains unloaded and affinity INCRESES.
