Causes of Insomnia include all except. 1. Hypnotic medication abuse. 2. Anxiety 3. Conditioned poor sleep 4. Withdrawal from drugs or alcohol 5. Use of diazepam

where did u get this question from? i think all can be a potential cause of insomnia. anxiolytics act as hypnotics but they are good for short term use. usually anxious pts have reduced sleep and use of the anxiolytic helps alleviate the anxiety and hence improve sleep. long term however it adversely affects sleep, including its quality ( will tell the phase of sleep it affects specifically..cant find it now). for the anxiety patients u know (dunno if this is relevant for step) in real life for anxiety pts we prescribe BDZ for a maximum of two weeks. we start on fluoxetine. yes it IS an antidepressant but doc in chronic anxiety. it is given with the bdz initially as a side-effect is agitation etc. the tolerance, dependence and abuse of BDZs discourages long term use
