hi
people say that if you plan to do a fellowship then you better go to residency on J 1 cos fellowships are mostly on J 1 anyway and that its difficult to get H 1 fellowships.
my point is if you start your GC process in residency then can you get fellowship on H 1 going on to GC or EA?
i know this is a far fetched question but i am curious.

it true that its difficult relatinely to find fellowship on H1 but not unusual. About 40 to 50% fellowships will consider H1 visa, while almost all will considr J 1. But if u r on J 1, then it is more difficult to find a waiver after coompleting felowship

competetive fellowhips are always in demand and it is well known fact and very understandable that amgs' r preferred,if u come on j1 then u need waiver then wait for GC and get into fellowship.

Or do some research on J1 and get into fellowship because without papers and publications there is no one who will consider an img's application.

with h1b u can always go on for j1 when u go for fellowships.u will be issued j1 for 7 years so if ur plannin on cardio then do 3 years cardio and then 2-3 years electrophysio or interventional cardiology for remaing 3-4 years, but if u wanna do cardio on h1b then 3 years out of 6 r spent on residency 1-2 years on research and then where is the time to do fellowship? u wud have exhuasted ur h1b period but good thing is u can always shift to j1 and carry on.

think over all parameters n decide.(if ur married to a doctor then it doesnt matter one can do waiver and one can percieve fellowship options provided there is good understanding b/w partners!!)

another point - u cannot immediately switch from h1 to j1. i believe u have to go outside usa for 1 yr compulsorily. then u can come back and take a h1 again as the h1 counter is reset.

also programs are now preferrin candidates on h1 rather than j1 bcoz many ppl left fellowships midway when got a precious waiver and left the pds burnt

apurva
