Hi, I just started applying for step 3 and I am confused which state should I take the test in and HOW and why does the state matter. Please forgive my ignorance.. I read on the fsmb site all states require atleast one year postgrduate training to be eligible to take step 3.Does this mean you can take the test only after completing one year of your residency, but still I have seen so any people clearing step 3 before starting residency. please if anyone can explain. Can a person take step 3 in a state different from the state he is going to start his resdency. Thanks a lot

Check www.fsmb.org you can take step 3 in another state/different from the state where you will do your residency, it doesn't matter. States and their specific requirements are in this website, check it out!

Hi chemamr, Thank you for the info. I did go through the web site you mentioned. Can you tell me which states allow to take step3 without 1 year of postgraduate training as i couldnt find one on fsmb website.

tdr and cprax, if you go to fsmb and hit the button for online application (step 3) you'll automatically come through the state specific requirement chart for step 3 and this chart is different from the chart you can find for state licensure requirements (I made the same mistake first). There are several states that have no postgraduate training requirements for taking step 3, including Delaware, CT, Arkansas, ... good luck
