Do I have to do an internship to get a residency if I am not specialized already in my home country? If such how long will an internship last?

An internship is the first year of your residency. Say you get a spot in Internal Medicine: your first year is your internship, then you become a junior resident, then a senior resident. Then you graduate, take the ABIM boards and become a board certified internist.
