it is a fact that test is not same through out each year, smetimes difficult and sometimes easy

FA saya that best months to take the test are june july august and also june is the month when most of the americans take the test,i searched exam experiences posts of these three months and most of the people in their posts mentioned that test test was relatively easy at that months.what do u people think?

  #2

American students take the test in June because that is how their medical colleges are structured. They get time off after 2nd year to study for the exam and this comes around to June.

Although I can't refute with evidence the idea that the exam is easier in certain months, it does seem highly unlikely that the ECFMG and NBME would ever allow this highly standardized exam to succumb to such flaws. Certainly, I would never dream of basing my entire study and exam plan around such a myth. shaking head

  #3

but i think that the chances to face difficult tests during these months decreases, bcs ecfmg

  #4

bcs ECFMG AND NBME doesnt use to make difficult test during these months,if they do that then most of US students will fail in thier own country

  #5

and also note that more than 90% of US stedents passes each year.

  #6

I don't agree with you here fakhan....90% of the US stundents pass each year because they are trained for precisely this form of evaluation.Like DrPak said....this is a standardised test and surely ECFMG and NBME ensure itremains exactly that regardless of the time fo the year.

  #7

what kind of special training they are getting , and u said that it is a standard test ,how it is standard test, some times the tests are very difficult and why the test are not at same level during each year.few years back there was only one test during whole year and at that time these biases werent there and why now these biases are present.

1)Cyra & DrPak are correct! 2) Ive said this Over and Over again, there is no EASY way to sneak into American Medicine. shaking head

ok then i think that americans are all geniuses and they are other world creatures, majority of them (more then 90%)pass the exam by just studying for 3 to 4 weeks while IMGS takes years to pass steps.

  #10

Dear friends , I have read about this some weeks ago in another forum. I agree with CYRA..... Test is standard and the ppl who tell us about their experience are not 100% correct. some student are so anxious that if they got 2 , 3 difficult Q then think that whole exam is difficult other says that it was easy. As for as i analyse these think I am sure that Exam is medium and it test your basic knowledge . ECFMG has a large store of Qs and they reshuffle the Qs and its our luck what U got from this.... Dont think about such thing just follow a track and go forward. I am also taking it in end of march ......... smiling face

  #11

i estimated it from exam experiences posts but how it is possible that majority of the people are not right(u wanna say that majority of people cant judge the test u) .i also believ that nbme has large store of questions but they dont reshuffle blindly, they are not so dumb that they dont understand that whether the test is easy or difficult.

Simple comment:

U.S. medical schools are more geared for a U.S. medical exam. {Whats so difficult about that statement?} I didnt say U.S medical schools were geared for Japanese medical exam or a New Zealand medical exam just a bigtime U. S. medical exam "USMLE" shaking head

fakhan...I don't know where you went to medical school...but i can speak for Pakistan whcih is where i went to medical school ....in most schools the evaluation is end of the year exams which consist of of essay type questions....obviously exam startegies are different!.When i say American students are "trained" for this exam...i mean thats the way they are taught....they are tested with multiple choice questions, similar to what we see on the USMLE ,from day 1.I hope I am making some sense here.

Whether a candidate finds a test easy or difficult cannot be solely pinned onto the type of questions on the test....or how the NBME "shuffles" the question pool! There are numerous other factors that come into play...to name a few...how well prepared the candidate is?,is the time management ok?,How well does one take a hold of their nerves during the exam?.I could go on forever...

mjl puts it forth aptly..."there is no EASY way to sneak into American medicine"

  #14

Good cyra-since you mention factors that come into play Id also add the "mechanics of how a person answers USMLE type questions.", are there many distractions in the room?, are you sitting next to someone typing 70 words per minute?, etc, you know the deal nod

thanx ,u cleared so many doubts in my mind,i was thinking about this idea bcs it is fact that more than 90% of us students pass the test each year,it is bcs nbme make the test which favors US students only,US students need just to pass the test and other thing that go towards their favor is the test format,75% questions of the test are about the diseases and things which are commen in US and that is well taught during thier basic years(thats come in definition of good training with mcqs type test format)and story is different for IMGS they have not only to pass but also to score, that needs extra effort, even IMGS need to work hard for just passing the exam,eg in pakistan ,when we study patho during 4th year we study most of the diseases which are commen in pakistan like infectious diseases and leave that diseases which are rare in our country like syndromes and genetics diseases but for usmle we have to study that things for the first time while US students just review and refresh that material

  #16

You're welcome fakhan...I am glad thats all sorted out.

mjl...you'd invariably have ppl who come in for other tests like GRE etc.But they give you ear plugs to block out any such distractions. My test center was great.I did have those "70 words/min" people come in but it worked out fine.Other than that it was as quiet as quiet can get.Good luck!

  #17

Thats the story, you could be the best Linius Pauling, Noble Peace Prize times 3! doc in the universe. but for licensure in the U.S. you are humbled to battle with the meticulous USMLE.

Also cyra maybe you had good luck but I found out that those "airplane controller type earphones didnt totally block the sound"

failure(s) in step(s)...in your opinion, what is the most important mistake ?

thanks in advance for being honest smiling face

1)Id say understanding is not enough, one must also be able to master and manipulate the info.

2)Having too many distractions, for example opening the refridgerator, the wife or husband calling, looking for the Fedex package, I could go on and on.

3)Being too cocky in anyone ONE subject, (which got me last time)

4)By the way working a full time job does count as a distraction

just wana give u guyz an example, i agree with everyone, US medical students pass with such a high rate is coz they were PREPARED and EDUCATED for these exams.....that's the system

in aga khan in pakistan, i got a huge amount of friends from there....do u know what their scores are? they're in the 90's and now the alumni have a huge network within the united states....why? all the students say that the medical school from the beginning are preparing them for MLE such topics and questions...so there u go...
