After I sign the letter of intent from the hospital offering me a prematch, is it safe to cancel all my interviews? The letter was faxed to me, which I signed and returned to the PC. Till now I am continuing with some of my interviews, but now I am having second thoughts as it is quite grueling. Does the letter of intent provide me legal protection? Or is the signed contract the final thing? I heard somewhere in the forum that the PD tore up the contract, and withdrew the offer that is pretty scary. Any inputs will be appreciated.

Do you know anyone from the program who accepted prematch last year? Talk to them and see. I think the letter of intent is pretty valid. How much do you trust the PD and his integrity? You can probably judeg his character and tell if he is being sincere or not from the way he has interacted with you so far...

Thanks for the input. I believe the hospital is quite reputed and I am more inclined to believe that the PD would not resort to something like tearing up a contract. Actually what I meant that someone in the forum mentioned that a PD from a different program did cancel the prematch offer by tearing up the contract (ofcourse there might be a legitimate reason) . As per the letter of intent I do satisfy all the conditions ,I am ECFMG certified thus passed CSA and have also withdrawn from the match. But I do know as long as I have not signed the contract there is no binding agreement so I feel little uneasy canceling the rest of the interviews.

Tania, I have acepted a prematch too and have only signed the letter of intent. I have cancelled abt 12 interviews and am just waiting for the contract to come in. But like your program, mine is also reputable and both the PD and the chairman have emailed me to welcome me into the program. So if there's any important emails from them, make sure you keep a copy.

I withdrew from the match right after I agreed to take a prematch offer on the phone. I didn't wait untill I or they sign anything. I think there is always a possibility that we might change our mind after agreeing to take prematchs, but programs changing their mind and retract their offer is unlikely scenario. It is like Marfan's Syndrome or Glanzmann thromboasthenia, you read it happens but never see it in reality.

Hello, I accepted a pre match offer from a reputed program, they sent me signed letter of intent., I have sent it back, They sent me more forms, and I sent back all the required documents. But when I ask about contract letter, they cant say anything right now.The PC seemed to be fumbling...??? Meanwhile, I have cancelled 2 good interviews. They have requested me to start with observership, and have also mentioned, that observership is meant only for candidates selected in the program. What should I do??????????????!!! Has anyone any idea, as to how much time it takes for the contract letter to reach?

i dont think there is anything to panic. sometimes programs send contracts to all premtched candidate together. I have also accepted a prematch and recieved the letter o intent. Th PD told me that they will be sending out contracts in first week of february. I have cancelled all ny interviews.

Are you sure about that? Should I wait until February to see if they mail me additional paperwork?

genedoc, my case was similar, I went back for second look and dinner, and the next day gave my answer( the prematch was offered in Nov.) and the same day a sample contract was emailed me to look over. The next day I went over and the contract was already signed by the PD and it was done. At the same time, at the dinner I expressed my worries about a prematch.

Tania - I didn't offer my opinion because I am not familiar with how other programs offer prematches. Every program is going to do something different. Good luck.

Yes, program require you to withdraw from the match. Some even ask you to send the proof of withdrawal from NRMP.
