hi there ...
to all the program coordinators who review this forum and interviewees. The following is juss my views about these interviews and match and prematch etc please ignore it if you dont like it . But dont start cursing me .

I understand that people are quite desperate to join a residency program after spending all that money and valuable time over applying and preparing for exams etc. . and i know that the programs as well want to secure better candidates and happy to offer prematches rather than get some dumb american/international graduate via match .

Now then , where has all this led us . Unnecessary bullshit and hassles to both the applicants and the PDs . and the worst affected i guess are the program coordinators. PDs are pushed , emailed and phoned etc for prematches and PDs themselves have harrassed applicants to sign a prematch before say ...a particular day ( usually within a week,...some are worse ..they want it then and there itself)

How fair is this system ? whats the point of calling hundreds of applicants for 10 jobs and offering 7 out of them as prematches and fooling the rest of the applicants. imagine 93 competing for 3 positions!!!! scandalous!!!!

and the applicants . I am not being rude here . They phone , email ,beg , irritate , and make things difficult for the PDs and PCs . hmmm....not at all a decent thing to do . well i dont blame them...its all the attraction of a prematch thats causing this .

Whats the solution for this problem :
abolish this prematch system and make it illegal .
then the small community programs might argue that ..they want better candidates may be IMGs with 90s rather than some dumb locals . Is there a solution to this problem . please talk about it .

Lets just match somewhere first and then talk about it:-)

And the match system did start with the same intention--"fairness to everyone applying"..but some slots just dont get filled in and they either have to scramble (post match) or offer prematches to applicants..

Also, the INS hasnt helped any immigration issues as well..it takes a while for H1 paperwork to be filed in, and most hospitals do not do the expedited processing for all its applicants (because it costs more)...I know so many residents who have gone through the match , waited for the third week of march and filed for H1 visas..but the stupid INS did not allow anything to be processed unitl august/sept...this year is not gonna be any different..alot of people just prefer to choose and be sure of what they are getting (prematch) rather than waiting for another three months and not knowing whats gonna happen..

Maybe the solution is to make the prematch illegal and make it mandatory for the programs to fill in the unfilled slots only by scramble.

i think it is the human right for an employer to offer job to whom they want and an employee to go wherever they are comfortable. as long as you think you have strong credentials and personality + /- experience, it doesn't really matter whether pre-matched or not.

would you deny if a decent program or top choice offer you pre-match today?

Nobody will deny, but the point drhagrid makes is a valid one..Prematches should be ruled out completely so as to allow everyone to go through the match..It doesnt make any sense that most of the positions get filled through these prematches (which should not be done since the advent of the match anyways) and the "good people" who were waiting for the match actually end up being disadvantaged because there are no good spots left..It is exactly for this discrepancy in allotment, the Match concept was introduced

guys...don't u thimk that if prematch was made illegal and all good spots were infact available for the match...the good positions wud still go to the candidates that would have received prematch(they r the ones the progs want so they wud be ranked higher on the ROLs) i don't think it wud make that much of a difference on the match outcome...though it would make everyone go thru one process and hence standardize the system.

i think the prematch is a disatvantage only for candidates that accept it. Why? 1st of all a prematch is offer by PD not taken by candidate and a PD will offer a prematch only to that candidates about which he thinks, that he cannot matched in his program (a pd will not fill a prematch spot with a candidates about which he feel that he will take easy thru match). Thus if you have an prematch offer from a program, be sure that you will do better thru match and at least in that program (or same category) you'll be matched. So, in my opinion that candidate who accept a prematch goes in a weaker program then he can get thru match, but he deserve it, because only who risk will win. If we are in match, let's match. On the other side PD should announce from the begining the prematch position and match position ( eg. we have 15 pos. from which 8 are prematched and 7 are go..)

P.S. I had decline(politely) 2 prematch offer till now

I agree with idea that prematch should be banned and made illegal. Prematch is a way by which residency programs exploit the insecurity of foreign medical graduates. Banning prematch would be good for all candidates(I mean for both those who get premacths and those who don't). The ill reputed programs would be the only losers if prematch was made illegal. Now the ill reputed programs are filling their positions with strong candidates who would have matched at better places had they had gone for the match.

BAN PREMATCH!!!

PS:I am not saying this out of jelousy or something. I my self have gotten 3 prematches. I have signed premacth at a program of my third choice.

Iam happy that atleast more than half of the people who responded ....had the same views as me . I am glad that NRMP had asked most of the programs to only go for a match and not to give prematches . atleast 2 of the interviews i attending said that ...and they used to offer prematch last year But not anymore from this year and both of them are small community programs.

anyways ...

catch ya later ..

I do not know what to say.

I just think that an IMG with less score but with experience is much better candidate than an AMG fresh grad.

But the applications will be reviewed by people who were given strict orders of score cut-off and

thats why the sellection process is not fair.

If the applications would be AT LEAST reviewed by a PD(physician), the situation will change.

So thats why excellent candidates recieves a rejection within 2 Hours and other candidate gets an interview.

The PD should not look ONLY at the score, but at everything in that candidate. But unfortunately you will be looked at according to your score.

High score=Expert

Low score=Ignorant
