Have been reading the posts and the successes.. congrats to all that have passed. I just completed my basic sciences from a carribbean medical school, and am now preparing for the USMLE step one exam. I have read the advice and the information that was given by those who have taken the exam.. but I have one question.. how did you control your anxiety?

I have really bad performance (test) anxiety. I made it through the Basic Sciences but I took my time on the exam (even slept during an exam) but made my highest score for that class. I have tried everything from relaxation exercises to medications (atenlol). The atenlol.. actually did help.. I could feel that my heart rate slowed down some. I was thinking that I might have to increase the dosage (was taking 10mg). Does anyone know how atenlol and its' effects on performance anxiety? There is not much on the internet and in the books. This is the one thing that scares me while I'm studying/reviewing for the exam now. I'm open to any suggestions and/or advice... especially if any of you have similar test anxiety, I would love to know how you deal with it.

Thank you

Hi Tazmd!

I am also a very anxious person, especially in exams

I have lost 5 pounds during my prep, and I got so anxious in the real exam that I couldnīt even understand what they were asking on the first questions! but I managed myself to control my anxiety (concentrate on the exam, not on my anxiety) and do the rest of the exam quite confortable. Still waiting for my score.

My advice is not to medicate yourself, unless you know what you are doing. Atenolol might not be the right medication, in fact you might not need any medication at all!

You seem to have done well in the past, so I donīt think your anxiety is interfering with your performance, itīs always good to have some level of anxiety in the exam and in everyday life.

Wish everything goes well, good luck.
