Hello and excuse me for bothering you in such a busy time of interviews and holiday season. i can not find this information on any site.
i am img. but i have undergraduate from usa , also had research experience ( without publication) and usa citizen.thinking to participate in 2005 match . i will be applying for ob-gyn residency. will you please explain to me what is the difference between observership and internship. specifically what is the goal ( point ) of internship. and how img can get internship . am i eligible for that. and what do you think best amount of time one have to spend in observership or internship. which is better internship or observership. thank you for your time.

If you are studying or already have completed your medical school in the USA, and if you are citizen there, i don't think you have to do obs/int in order to get residency there whether you are foreign or american.

  #3

no i am foreign medical school graduate, done my undergraduate in america and research work too. that is why i am thinking what should i consider to do observership or internship , to increase my chances to be in ob-gyn field.

Well, you have more chance to get a residency because you have worked in the usa hospital.

Observership = no longer in medical school, not licensed where you will be OBSERVING. Hands off, watching only.

Internship = licensed, employed physician.

thank you for explanation. is this mean that foreign medical graduate not eligible to do internship before he/she was not certified by ecfmg?thank again.

The terms that are used can be confusing because AMGs also do an subinternship in medical school.

IMG's can do externships (hands on experience) or observerships. Very few hospitals offer externships (I know of two that have that program). Many reasons from the expense of running a program, to insurance regulations that prohibit unlicensed physicians from being on patient care floors.

And you are correct, you cannot be in an internship without ECFMG certification.

(My, I am just full of negative news today, nicht wahr? sad )

what i know is that internship is the first year of residency, externship is a few weeks/months program after you graduate during which you can get to see how work is in a hospital, i know nothing about observership, how can you get an observership?

  #9

Telephone programs and find out if they offer observership positions. Many programs do not. There is no easy way to find one.

Take the USMLE exams, get your ECFMG certification, obtain a visa, apply through ERAS, sign up for the match, interview. Then hope that you can get a residency for July 2005.

Good luck

Sorry, but if I let out the names of the hosptials that will do this, it will do several things.

1. It will let more people know where I am located in the USA, which I am doing my best to remain anonymous and
2. If people know where I am located, I'll have to stop posting and trying to help in the little ways that I can.

 Sorry!

Hi bbb. thanks for all your advice.
I still have i question.I am from Mexico, i graduated some years ago, move in here, passed usmle... i want to enter the match in the anesthesiology program but they ask for a year of internship...what is an internship? is the residency? i'm very confused.

  #15

In order to join an anesthesiology program, you will need an internship year in Transitional medicine, or internal medicine. Anesthesia residency has a one year outside of their program that must be completed. Some programs have built the year into their curriculum, some haven't.

Yes, apply through ERAS. Check with the Anesth programs (in August, it's too early now) that you are interested to find out what they want.
