I was totally taken aback as I got a call from the Program Director offering me a pre-match. This hospital would be my 3rd or 4th choice, so I needed some time to think. This is a community hospital with an University Affiliation (and a chance to do rotation there too). But they will process the paperwork if I withdraw from the Match and send them the confirmation. I am happy nod but also confusedconfused .

My credentials are not stellar GC, Step 1 and 2 score: 82, ECFMG certified. US-LOR, USCE (2 months). Now for some reason if things go wrong, will I be able to re-instate myself in the Match?

I was given the Letter of Intent signed by PD that they welcome me into the Program and that I in turn should withdraw. But if all you have is PD's word, then it can be tricky: you withdraw from the Match... what if they take their offer back? If you want to go through Match after withdrawing ( in case something went wrong with pre-Match), my guess is you will have register like new again, pay a fee again plus additional $50 fee for a late application ( deadline is February, 22). But then your ID number will be different, so you will have to contact all the programs you had interview with that it is you. But again, it is just my guess. Try to e-mail or call NRMP people and ask them. Maybe you should ask PD or PC about a Letter of Intent gently... This is a tough decision to make. Good luck.

I called up NRMP they said I can re-instate into the match. I then checked the user guide for applicants http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/user.html (Page 30-33), there they state you can just click on "Reinstate" and be reinstated into the match.

hi vancomycin,

I used FMGPortal to get an externship in NY, it was quite expensive, but I feel it was the best investment me and my husband made. The doctor gave me a fantastic LOR and I feel that made a huge difference. I ended up getting 19 interview calls.

Website : www.fmgportal.com

hi rashmi_k3

what do you mean by publicity of cheap idiots.i dont know tania_b

if u know a way to get externership in us hospital lemme know then

  #9

If you mean I am doing publicity for FMGPortal, I take strong offense rakshmi_k3. Don't get so personal. If sharing information means cheap publicity perhaps you need some introspection. Someone asked me in the forum as to how I got USCE I just responded to that. I have nothing to gain from FMGPortal infact I ended up paying quite a bit of money.

that was'nt nice!

there are lots of such organizations out there willing to help us out in order to get externship positions, but not many people here knows about their credibility until i read about tania's post saying it all, despite her scores just two mnths of externships have rewarded her with 19 interviews, there arent many imgss with that much interviews here even with very high scores, nothings worth more than that

thnx tania

hi ssrpk,

I am honestly glad, that you get a clear picture of what the situation for foreign graduates really is. It is getting tougher every minute, and I guess many people do not realise it.Especially with a fresh graduate like me, with not much experience, this is what made the difference.

Thanks to all of you who supported me while I gave it back to rashmi_k3.

And to top it all, I got a prematch offer from a very good program, in Internal Medicine in my choice of location, and since it was my very 2 nd choice in my own rank list, I jumped on to it, and am all set to start on July 1st.

I honestly feel, that your interview and your externship makes a hell of a difference. It is only because of these other aspects , have programes invited me. But yes, visa issue certainly stands up above all.

Best of luck

Actually I do not believe that there are a lot of such friendly, willing organizations. I tried to contact a few which clamed to have legal affiliations with institutions. I asked a very simple question so I could verify such affiliation before I pay thousands of $. Never heard back from them. So, maybe it can be done but it did not happen to me. I had to rely on myself and started calling and writing to the Programs. The institution I did my externship ( FREE by the way) is on this Forum externship suggestions. Being to interviews I saw observers here and there. So people find places to start from. Do-it-yorself is a way to go.

congrats tania

i agree there must be places where u can get usce for free. im tryin find em myself. but then if u have the money to shell - externships not a bad option too. i too had called up a few of these portals but they had problems get me somethin in cali.

the hand which fits the glove

  #16

hi guys.csobsessed can u answer a lil question.if u do approach programs on yr own.do u still need to get medical malpractise insurance .or can u do hands on externship without it..raised eyebrow..really confused abt this!!!

"...hi CSobsessed..i'm also looking for exetrnship...can u plz tell me how u got ur externship.?any suggestions or tips on how to approach these programs?"

That is what I am trying to say again and again. I simply called and e-mailed a few places that I am such and such, my credentials are such and such, and that I am looking for an externship or any kind of hands-on experience in American Hospital setting. Did not get any respond. Then I took my documents and went to the Program in person. I was told that there are many other people who want the same, that Program accepts a very few externs every 3 months for three months period and if they chose me I will be called. They indeed called me in two weeks for the interview with a chief-resident. I was not asked about malpractice issues at all and do not know how they handle it. Another thing is that an extern is not allowed to do any procedures, supervised all the time, can not give orders verbally or write orders without them being cosigned, so what you can be sued for-- you are never alone?! Yes, you take H& P and follow -up the patients but you always in touch with a senior. You gather information and report it with your thoughts what can be done about it. That is it. My point is that if you talk to PC and she/he says they do not accept ANY externs then NO organization work with them or she/he would tell you so to contact such and such for a slot. If the program do have externship-- you do not need a middle man, you can do it yourself. I know a lot of people who are in the same boat as me or who almost finished residency. I am yet to meet one person who got externship through some kind of organization.

I do agree that the organization I used did not provide any openings in a hospital, I did work with a doctor in his clinic. I had complete hands on experience, BUT it was not in a hospital. I agree that an externship in a hospital setting is much more valuable. To me at that time I felt that this was the next best option.

thank u CSobsessed and tania_b..for clearing up my concerns.May GOD bless u both!!
